Call for Partners - Kibera Fashion Week

From a railway-line runway in 2022 to a Matatu-culture runway in 2023, Kibera Fashion Week has turned sustainability, culture, and craft into a global story - featured on BBC, The Guardian, Washington Post, DW, and more.

Kibera is where our story began, but the realities we explore are shared by communities worldwide. This edition, our platform turns to climate change: its impact locally, and its impact globally.

We’re calling on NGOs, climate organisations, beauty brands, textile industries, and government bodies to help us build it. Your support funds the stage, the designers, and the story.

”Jeg kalder Kibera talenternes hjem. Her er så mange dygtige og kreative mennesker, mange er endnu mere talentfulde og inspirerende end mig. Jeg er bare lykkedes med at skabe en platform, og derfor vil jeg gerne løfte flere op og samtidig ændre narrativet om Kibera.”

Sådan fortæller vores partner, den kenyanske modesigner David Avido til Verdens Bedste Nyheder.

I slutningen af august havde vi besøg af David, der mødtes med en række danske institutioner og organisationer for at få indblik i dansk design og mode.

Et af højdepunkterne var en talk skabt i samarbejde med Verdens Bedste Nyheder, hvor redaktør Karoline Rahbek interviewede David om hans arbejde, om hvad vi kan lære af den kenyanske mode, og ikke mindst om idéen bag og udviklingen af Kibera Fashion Week, som vi er stolte af at støtte næste udgave af.

Ud over den velbesøgte talk resulterede samtalen i en artikel, der netop er blevet publiceret. Her understreger David blandt andet:

”Jeg ønsker at vise, at store ting kan også kan komme fra de steder, hvor vi mindst venter det fra. Der er så mange unge mennesker, der vokser op i Kibera og andre samfund under svære vilkår. De fortjener at se, at deres udgangspunkt ikke behøver at definere, hvad de kan blive til, og hvor de ender.”

special moments from our Sewing Program Cohort 3 graduation, as DON PAPICHULO and SEASAW. presented certificates to three of our students.

Every student in Cohort 3 received a certificate, with each graduate celebrated and presented theirs alongside different members of the team and community who supported their journey.

Each certificate represents six months of learning, 72 classes, countless stitches, new skills, and the courage and commitment to keep growing.

We are incredibly proud of every one of our graduates. ❤️

Our Graduation ceremony for | Sewing Program Cohort 3 - 2026

72 classes. 6 months. So many stitches, lessons, friendships, and moments of growth.

From January to June, our Cohort 3 met three times a week to learn sewing and, along the way, build confidence, teamwork, communication, and belief in themselves.

This diverse group brought together Deaf women and men, young mothers, and passionate young people from the community, learning side by side and learning from one another and how to work together.

The program was completely free for all participants, made possible with the support of the Danish Cultural Institute and the generous learning space provided by Uweza Art Gallery.

We are so proud of everything this cohort has accomplished.

Since January, our free sewing and tailoring program has brought together a diverse group of learners, including deaf women and men, young mothers, and other community members eager to develop practical skills and create new opportunities for themselves.

Over the past months, students have been learning the fundamentals of sewing and tailoring, building confidence, creativity, and technical skills with every stitch.
We are deeply grateful to the for funding this program and to for generously providing the space where classes have been held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

As we enter the final weeks of training, we celebrate the dedication and progress of our students. Classes will continue through the last week of June, with graduation taking place on 27th June.
This journey has been about more than sewing, it has been about inclusion, empowerment, learning, and community.

Together, we are stitching skills into opportunities and dreams into reality.

Just like that we’ve started month 6 - and Couldn’t Be More Proud of this class.

5 months ago, many of our students had never touched a sewing machine. Today, they confidently operate one, create their own projects, and continue to grow in skill and creativity every week.

Our class is made up of incredible deaf students, young mothers, and passionate young people who have shown dedication, resilience, and a genuine eagerness to learn. Watching their confidence grow has been just as rewarding as seeing their sewing skills develop.

We are so proud of how far they have come and excited to see where this journey takes them next. 💙

As we are headed towards half the time in the program, we can definitely see the growth on what and how the participants are engaging in. During the third week we made an Introduction into making shirts and Guess what! by the third day shirts were made and worn 🎉🎉🎉

Interesting progress from our students , By the second week they are able to step on the machines and do skirts by themselves, we are enjoying the progress and growth so much.

We cant wait for the final project and partners who will onboard and come support and even absort the young Talents 😌
