From whence we had arisen we cared not as all that mattered was where we would commune.

I would live home in Buru Buru every school day morning to make my way to Upper Hill, along the way others dressed in the unmistakable grey and green would get into the bus, some at Outer Ring Estate and others at Uhuru with a few more in Bahati.

When the bus would drop us off in town we would cluster into a single indistinguishable mass as we made our way up the hill.

While we rode the bus others would get getting mashalled into their parents vehicles in Karen while others would be driven down from Lavington by chauffeurs while another would be meandering through the narrow alleys of Kibra.

But come 10 am we would all be pushing and shoving at Commandos kiosk behind the school to purchase a mandaza or two as well as a samosa to made that oil filled Kombii.

It didn't matter where we each came from that morning or how we each got to school but at that moment we were one, all with the same objective, to feed and then return to the riggers of acquiring knowledge.

In the same unity let us rally as one to give back with no expectation of a return or reward.

Back to my nostalgic flush back.

When I walked into Upper Hill for the first time as a student in form one, a I walked down the stretch of road I was welcomed by the school insignia, The Griffin.

I had arrived in home cloths like all the other monos' as uniform was issued at school a few days after arrival.

Even after receiving our uniform one item was not included, the green blazer with the school badge. Unlike today where school badges are sawn onto pull overs then we followed the gentlemans dress code.

Our blazers arrived about 2 or 3 weeks after the rest of the uniform meaning we anxiously awaited their arrival.

I remember having my name called to pick up my blazer, with a surname starting with Y you can imagine how long it took before I had the opportunity to receive mine as I stood and watched others unwrap theirs and immediately put them on while others carried theirs still in the wrapping like a treasure towards class.

As I stretched out my hands to receive my blazer I finally became a Hillian and no jungle green, maroon or blue would be allowed upon my shoulders, for I had earned the green "loco" blaze upon which the Griffin was embossed.

Would my life have been any better if I went elsewhere, I doubt it and that is why to date I remain a Hillian.

So to those who earned their place at UPPER HILL SCHOOL and are proud of themselves let us give back a little so that our spirit shall linger a little longer.

A single shade of Grey!

When I arrived to join Form 1 in 1982, we all arrived in home cloths as all uniform was supplied through the school.

After registration we had our measurements taken for our shorts, shirts, pullovers and that cherished wollen green blazer.

For the next or so weeks or was easy to spot the rabbles aka mono's as we were all in home cloths making it very easily to get bullied.

Then came the great day when our uniforms arrived, many were so exited that they couldn't wait to get home, in those days Upper Hill was a day school.

On the following day the home cloths had vanished together with our visible individual identities and all that remains was a single shade of Grey usually wrapped in a green pullover.

For those with as fond memories as I do of those early days that shaped my life join me in giving back to the place that molded us into who we are.

When I heard parents lamenting about CBC/CBE, being a concerned soon to be grandfather, I asked one of the startups that have the advantage of being on speed dial on my phone to see how we could assist the parents.

The startup built a Pathway advisor to help the confused parents with children in Junior Secondary to get a better appreciation of what is being expected of their children.

As part of the development the team gave me a dashboard that gives me insights into how the parents are engaging with the platform and it has been very sad to note that many parents are clueless about who their children are such as what they are passionate about as well as their competencies (competency based education).

Responding to simple questions such as their child's academic performance last term seems to throw off the parents.

So, if you are a parent with a child on Year 7, 8 or 9, before you go off blaming the President for the cold spell find out how well you know your child or better still, let your child tell you as they go through the pathway advisor.

The CBE Pathway Advisor is an intelligent, user-friendly web application designed to help Kenyan parents identify the most suitable Senior Secondary School (SSS) pathway for their child under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). It eliminates guesswork by analyzing both academic performance and pe...
