Young single mothers empowerment group (YSMEGCK) is a Non- profit community based organization founded by Duncan ARARA and Kibera Community that empowers needy single teen age mothers though various integrated activities to enable them achieve quality livelihood and be self sustainable. We are registered with the government of Kenya under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social development. All our staffs are volunteers who have dedicated their time to offer knowledge and skills to empower the less fortunate in our community. Project Description
The organization undertakes the following activities to achieve its objectives;
Beadwork factory
The teen age mothers do beadwork and share the proceeds among themselves to support their household needs. Group therapy meetings. This is done once a week to share about their own challenges affecting individual and develop mechanism on how to reduce them, this help solve the problem by half and also increase their sharing skills and be able to be their own counselor
Soap and juice making
This is done by a section of the mums to help support the administration and food support to the mothers. Children movie for fun
The children of the young mothers and the community come to the centre and enjoy a movie and after share a bit of the story learnt from the money and just play and have bit of fun. Teen age mothers camp
Help the teen age mothers from different villages of kibera come together and share their challenges and learn from each other for self and group empowerment, it allows them to exchange several ideas including business and life experience also touching relationship challenges and possible solution. Here they talk about drug abuse, prostitution etc and life changing’s approaches and many more, it’s a free forum for life and own experiences. Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) support project that involves educational support initiative, basic needs support, Career path guiding and counseling. Basic Computing and Training to kibera community
Computer trainings for the young single mothers and local vulnerable youths from the communities in kibera villages. They are young people who have never worked with a computer before and they cannot afford to pay for computer lessons in colleges around. This is meant to empower them through computer skills and enable them acquire information technology skills to help them secure jobs in the information and technology sector as a source of their livelihood. Voluntary Service
Deployment of both local student and International volunteers to community projects i.e. community clean up, HIV/AIDS project, beadwork factory, playing with kids, teaching in the local schools. The volunteers share their skills and experiences with the local community, cross cultural exchange, idea development and exploration of the local serenity.
