Mukuru Kwa Njenga Ward in Embakasi South Constituency has endured years of inadequate access to two of the most basic services; clean water and electricity. The capture of these essential services by cartels has left many residents paying more while continuing to live under difficult and unsafe conditions.

Following the removal of electricity transformers from the area in 2024, many households have remained without power, further disrupting livelihoods, education, security, and economic opportunities.

These are among the key issues that residents of Embakasi South Constituency identified and prioritised during the grassroots Citizen Assembly held under the Ajenda Yetu Project.

With support from Uraia , Elgia Afric and in Kenya, Daraja Civic Initiatives Forum continues to engage communities across Nairobi to ensure that citizens' voices and priorities inform the Nairobi County Citizen Manifesto. We are championing a people-driven agenda that demands equitable access to essential services, accountable leadership, and inclusive development for all.

Through the Project supported by Uraia Elgia Afric and , Daraja CIF led the grassroots consultation in Kibra Constituency, bringing together community members to identify their development priorities and aspirations for a better Nairobi.
The discussions revealed pressing challenges that continue to affect residents, including inadequate access to quality education, particularly for learners with disabilities; poor healthcare services, rising insecurity, and growing youth unemployment.
Community members also expressed concern over the exploitation of young people through political violence, where unemployed youth are often recruited as goons during election periods. Participants emphasized that lasting peace and security can only be achieved by addressing the root causes of youth vulnerability through meaningful economic opportunities, skills development, and inclusive governance.
Despite these challenges, the consultation was filled with hope and determination. Residents proposed practical, citizen-led solutions and reaffirmed their commitment to using the Nairobi County Citizen Manifesto as a platform to secure political commitments and hold future leaders accountable.
Every conversation strengthens our collective voice. Every priority brings us closer to a Nairobi where development is inclusive, responsive, and people-centred.

On Tuesday this week, Daraja CIF took the Nairobi County Citizen Manifesto process straight to the community, hosting a grassroots consultation at St. Mary's Hall (University Mtaani) in Kiamaiko, Mathare Constituency.

Different community groups came together under one roof to speak openly about the issues that matter most to them, from everyday challenges to long-term development priorities, as Nairobi prepares for its next administrative cycle.

This is what it means to build a manifesto FROM the people, not just FOR them. When residents are given a seat at the table, the solutions that follow actually reflect their lived realities.

As a member of Kenya's Basic Education Working Group, Daraja CIF and partners invite stakeholders to a dissemination session on Kenya's Basic Education Sub-Sector Budget for FY 2026/27, which will be held on Monday 20th June 2026.

This session will reflect our continued commitment to strengthening public participation in budget-making and ensuring that education financing decisions are transparent, evidence-based, and responsive to the needs of learners across the country.
