Has your ward developed its own citizen manifesto, or ama mnangoja politicians to decide your priorities?

A citizen manifesto gives the community the power to identify and prioritize its real development needs based on lived experiences, not campaign rhetoric. It becomes a practical tool to assess candidates during elections and to hold leaders accountable once they are in office.

Usisettle for empty promises. Organize, define your agenda, and demand leadership that responds to it.

With support from Plan International , Daraja recently convened a one-day introductory forum bringing together community members, CSOs, and representatives from both the legislative and executive arms of .

This marks the beginning of an inclusive process to develop the Kiamaiko Community Strategic Plan (2026–2028) , a roadmap that will guide priorities across key sectors affecting the community.

By placing residents at the center of planning and decision-making, this process strengthens meaningful public participation and local ownership of development. With the community and the Nairobi County Government’s backing, Kiamaiko is not just planning projects but defining its development journey and advancing the spirit of the Constitution of Kenya.

Budget transparency starts with informed citizens, and Nairobi’s budget champions are stepping up.

Last week, Daraja CivicInitiativesForum, in partnership with , throughSafe and Inclusive Cities brought together community budget champions from Mathare and Kibra for a dynamic annual refresher session.
As we approach the close of the 2025/26 budget cycle and gear up for 2026/27, these champions are sharpening their skills to better support their communities in engaging both County and National Government processes.
From tracking public spending to amplifying citizen voices, they are driving accountability where it matters most; on the ground.

Stronger knowledge. Stronger voices. Stronger communities.

From Cleanup to long-term Change in Mathare!

Last weekend, Daraja CIF, in partnership with Mathare CSOs and the Nairobi County Government, mobilized over 300 community members for a high-impact cleanup exercise. The result? Approximately 5 tons of waste removed from drainage systems and public spaces, reducing flood risks and improving sanitation for 10,000+ residents.

But we didn’t stop there. With support from , through the Safe and Inclusive Cities , Daraja CIF donated and officially handed over rakes, spades, and protective gear to local CSOs. Now, these groups are equipped to sustain weekly cleanups independently, turning a one-time action into a long-term system.

The cleanup activity achieved the following Key outcomes:

-Cleaner, safer environment in Mathare
-Strengthened collaboration between CSOs & county government
-Local ownership through equipment handover

Together, we’re not just cleaning up, we’re building a resilient community.

Young people are not just future leaders-they are the core element of effective governance today. Yet too often, their participation is hindered by a lack of meaningful dialogue with duty bearers.

Daraja CIF joined Uraia and United Nations Development Programme - UNDP for a powerful Youth Civic Action dialogue under the Deepening Grassroots Engagement Program. This was more than a discussion; it was a solutions-driven space where young leaders shared their lived experiences and worked together to generate practical, actionable ideas to bridge the engagement gap. The session generated youths-duty bearers engagement roadmap to be implemented in the coming weeks.

When young people are heard, governance is transformed. Their insights, energy, and commitment are key to building inclusive and responsive systems.
This is what bridging the gap looks like. This is -out in action.

The day’s engagement clearly demonstrated that young people are eager for spaces where they can openly discuss the issues affecting them and collectively shape solutions. The Youth Hangout successfully created that opportunity, giving them the platform and freedom they needed to chart the way forward.
