🌍 World Environment Day 2026 | June 5
Theme: Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.

At CANCO, we believe that meaningful climate action begins with empowered communities.

On 5th June 2026, we joined the people of Jimbo Village Fish Landing Site, Vanga, Lungalunga Sub-County, Kwale County, to commemorate World Environment Day under the global theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future." The celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on the vital role that coastal communities play in protecting marine and coastal ecosystems while strengthening resilience to climate change.

The event brought together community members, local leaders, and partners in a shared commitment to:

🌊 Protect marine and coastal ecosystems
🌱 Promote sustainable fisheries and responsible natural resource management
♻️ Encourage environmental stewardship through collective local action
🤝 Strengthen community participation in conservation and climate resilience initiatives

Healthy oceans and healthy coastal environments are the foundation of thriving communities and sustainable livelihoods. As we celebrated World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to working alongside communities to safeguard biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and build a more resilient future for generations to come.

🌊 Building Global Solidarity for Small-Scale Fisheries

Alongside the Our Ocean Conference, we held an engagement meeting with a representative from Transform Bottom Trawling Coalition and the Secretary General of the National Federation of Small-Scale Fisherworkers of India (NFSFI) whom we hosted for a knowledge exchange on community-led fisheries governance and sustainable coastal livelihoods.

The visit provided an opportunity to share experiences on strengthening the role of small-scale fishers in fisheries governance, advancing sustainable resource management, and promoting the implementation of the FAO SSF Guidelines.

We also had the privilege of visiting our project site in Kidundu, where the delegation interacted with community members and witnessed firsthand the impact of locally led fisheries and livelihood initiatives.

These exchanges remind us that while our oceans connect us, so do the shared aspirations of fishing communities around the world secure sustainable livelihoods, healthy marine ecosystems, and a stronger voice in decision-making.

Together, we are strengthening the global movement for small-scale fisheries and community-led ocean governance.

🌊 A Busy and Inspiring Week at the 11th Our Ocean Conference

Last week marked an important milestone for Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO) as we joined global leaders, practitioners, and ocean champions at the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenya.

We were proud to support 8 community representatives from Shella, Marereni, Kichwa Cha Kati, Mwaembe, Mnarani, and Kilifi Central Beach Management Units (BMUs), as well as the Sokoke Community Forest Association, to participate in this global platform and amplify the voices of coastal communities.

Through our exhibition booth, we showcased the incredible work being undertaken by communities along the Kenyan coast to promote sustainable fisheries, ecosystem conservation, and resilient coastal livelihoods. The exhibition provided an opportunity to share lessons, innovations, and community-led solutions that are contributing to healthier oceans and stronger local economies.

We were also honored to make a floor announcement during the Sustainable Fisheries Plenary on 18th June, where we announced CANCO's commitment on "Advancing Community-Led Ocean Governance and Sustainable Fisheries in Coastal Kenya." This commitment recognizes the critical role that coastal communities play in fisheries governance and calls for greater inclusion, equitable access to resources, and support for sustainable livelihood opportunities.

As we reflect on the conference, one message stands out clearly: healthy oceans depend on empowered communities. We remain committed to ensuring that the voices, knowledge, and priorities of coastal communities continue to shape the future of ocean governance and sustainable fisheries management.

We are pleased to announce that Muturi Kamau, CANCO’s National Network Coordinator for the Kenya Oil and Gas Working Group (KOGWG), will be a featured expert on KBC Channel 1 TV

Muturi will join host Ben Troy Njue on the program "Biz Check" to provide professional insights into a critical national issue: The Impact of New Fuel Prices on the Economy.

As the lead for our Oil and Gas programme, Muturi coordinates national efforts to ensure sustainable and equitable governance within the sector. His appearance offers a valuable opportunity to hear expert analysis on how shifting energy costs affect both the national economy and the livelihoods of everyday citizens.
