UNISFA was established by Security Council Resolution 1990 on 27 June 2011 to ensure security in Abyei area after a bloody confrontation between the forces of the Government of Sudan (GoS) and Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) over territorial rights in May 2011. The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) is mandated
- to make Abyei Area free of arms;
- to protect civ

ilians in Abyei under imminent threat of violence;
- to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and the free movement of humanitarian personnel;
- to establish and strengthen the capacity of the Abyei Police Service;
- to monitor, verify and investigate unlawful armament, troops and any armed groups deployment in Safe Demilitarized Border Zone including Abyei area;
- to protect UN personnel, facilities, installations, and equipment.
