Today, the Board of Trustees of LUMO Community Wildlife Conservancy concluded a two-day governance training aimed at strengthening institutional leadership, accountability, and effective oversight.
Having assumed office eight months ago, the training provided an important opportunity for board members to deepen their understanding of their roles and responsibilities, while building the capacity needed to guide the conservancy with integrity and strategic focus.
The sessions covered key principles of good governance, including the separation of roles between the board and management, ethical leadership, and the importance of transparency, policy adherence, and sustainability. Trustees also engaged with practical aspects of governance such as managing conflicts of interest, conducting effective meetings, and ensuring clear, accountable decision-making processes.
A strong emphasis was placed on the board’s role in financial oversight, legal compliance, and risk management — equipping members with the tools to interrogate financial reports, align budgets with strategic priorities, and safeguard the organisation’s assets and mission.
The training also explored stakeholder engagement, enabling the board to better understand and respond to the diverse interests connected to the conservancy, while strengthening communication approaches that build trust and support implementation.
Continuous learning remains essential in advancing effective governance. This training marks an important step in empowering the Board of Trustees to provide responsible stewardship and ensure that LUMO Conservancy continues to operate with transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
