Kwacha Afrika Kwacha Afrika: Inspiring and empowering youths to transform themselves and their communities. Kwacha Afrika's
thematic areas include : 1. Peace and Security.

Kwacha Afrika is an organization that was founded by a group of young volunteers in the year 2000, who wanted to explore theatre as a tool of offering educative messages to the community on issues of Adolescence, Reproductive Health and the negative impact of HIV and AIDS. It uses Participatory Educational Theatre (PET) as a main approach to disseminate its messages. Kwacha Afrika is an indigenous

coastal phrase which means 'Arise Afrika.'

Over the years, Kwacha Afrika has grown from a purely theatre-oriented organization to become a leading youth organization, which works throughout the Coast region of Kenya. Recently Kwacha Afrika has been able to refine its thematic areas and approach in working towards achieving enhanced community led approaches in issues of development, and addressing youth matters in Coastal region and specifically Mombasa County. 6. Kwacha Afrika empowers talented, but otherwise idle and unemployed Kenyan youths to use educational theater, dance, and music to foster social change in our local communities which are afflicted by the all-too-common concoction of poverty: poor education, hunger, corruption, the marginalization of women, drug abuse, and rampant infectious diseases, especially HIV/AIDS. But Kwacha is more than just another theater troupe using edutainment to bring about behavior change. It's a community of solidarity and support for youths who struggle with that noxious concoction of poverty. It's a stepping stone and launching-pad for those youths who refuse to accept their lowly status in Kenyan society, who wish to acquire and exercise the life skills they will need to pursue their dreams. Our theory of change is simple: while Kwacha's youths transform their troubled communities, they also transform themselves in the process, and they may look to their future with the passion and agency to live fulfilling lives. To all of Africa's youths, this message is for you:

Our recent engagement forum in Timbwani Ward, Likoni Sub-County brought together youth, community leaders, ward and sub-county administrators for an open and meaningful conversation on governance, citizen participation, and electoral processes.

The forum provided a valuable platform for participants to explore how communities can play a more active role in promoting credible elections, demanding better service delivery, and influencing county development priorities. Through dialogue and shared experiences, participants gained a deeper understanding that governance is not just the responsibility of leaders—it is a collective responsibility that requires active citizen engagement.

When young people and communities are informed, organized, and involved, they become powerful drivers of accountability, development, and positive change.

💡 Your voice matters.
🗳️ Your participation counts.
🤝 Your community deserves to be heard.

Together, we are building a culture of active citizenship where every resident has a role in shaping a more responsive and inclusive future.

Our recent Community Theatre Forum in Changamwe Sub-County, brought together community members and young people in a vibrant and engaging space for dialogue on issues that matter to our democracy and future.

Through the power of theatre, storytelling, and open conversations, participants explored the importance of peaceful elections, voter responsibility, electoral accountability, and evidence-based civic engagement. The performances sparked reflection, challenged perceptions, and encouraged citizens to think critically about their role in shaping the leadership and development they desire.

More than just entertainment, community theatre proved to be a powerful tool for civic education—making complex electoral issues accessible, relatable, and engaging for all.

As we prepare for future electoral processes, let us remember that peaceful and accountable elections begin with informed, active, and responsible citizens.

🤝 Peace starts with us.
🗳️ Democracy thrives when we participate.
🌍 Change happens when communities engage.

Meaningful change begins when communities come together to listen, learn, and act. Through creative and inclusive approaches such as community dialogues, theatre, storytelling, youth forums, and awareness sessions, we are engaging diverse sections of our communities in conversations around Gender-Based Violence (GBV), gender equality, and leadership opportunities for young women.

By creating safe spaces where experiences can be shared openly and respectfully, we are helping communities challenge harmful norms, promote positive attitudes, and strengthen support for women and girls to thrive. These engagements are not only raising awareness about rights and protection from violence but are also inspiring more young women to step forward as leaders, decision-makers, and agents of change.

When communities embrace equality, everyone benefits. Together, we can build a future where every woman and girl lives free from violence, has equal opportunities, and is empowered to participate fully in shaping her community.

💜 Equality is not a privilege—it is a right.
🤝 Safe spaces create stronger communities.
🌟 Empowered young women create a brighter future for all.

Today, we celebrate Madaraka Day — a historic moment that reminds us of Kenya’s journey toward self-governance, freedom, and the power of citizens to shape their own destiny.

As we commemorate this important day, we are reminded that true freedom goes beyond independence. It means having access to opportunities, quality services, information, justice, and a voice in the decisions that affect our communities.

Kwa vijana, Madaraka Day is a reminder that the future of Kenya is not something to wait for — it is something to actively build. Through civic participation, leadership, innovation, and community action, young people have the power to drive positive change and strengthen our democracy. 💪🌍

As we celebrate 64 years of self-rule, let us continue to uphold the values of unity, accountability, inclusion, and active citizenship.

Madaraka ni wajibu. Madaraka ni ushiriki. Madaraka ni sauti ya wananchi.
