Mwadime lost his sight suddenly while on active duty, working as a ranger in one of the parks along the coast of Kenya. Losing his sight led him to getting lost deep in the jungle, and he was unable to trace his way back home to his family. He spent two terrifying days wandering blindly until a kind herdsman found him and helped him reunite with his family, who had already filed a missing person alert through the local leaders and police stations.
Back home, Mwadime was still in the dark and relied on his family to help him with basic tasks like going to the washroom. They longed to seek medical help, but they couldn't get ophthalmic services from nearby health facilities. The only hospital they could get to was distant, and travel alone was costly, without even considering consultation fees, surgery, and medication; they had lost hope.
Mwadime’s niece brought him to one of our outreach clinic teams, where we primarily serve people like Mwadime and his family, who have lost hope due to financial barriers to accessing quality eye care. He was seen and diagnosed with bilateral cataracts, and he was booked for surgery in both eyes. Today, Mwadime’s happiness is evident in his smile! His family no longer sees him as a burden because he can do almost all activities on his own.
