HAKI Africa Enhancing Progressive Realization of Human Rights in Kenya and Beyond
(202)

HAKI Africa is a local initiative that brings together community activists and leaders who work at the grassroots to ensure improved livelihoods for their people and the advancement of socio economic issues all over the country. Particularly, the organization seeks to agitate for the recognition and empowerment of local communities in Kenya to fully participate in development initiatives with a vi

ew to improving the standards of living amongst all including the poor and marginalized. While the word “Haki” is Swahili for “justice” or “human right”, we have given meaning to the four letters which to us stand for Humanity; Activism; Knowledge; and Integrity. The organization further incorporates the School of Human Rights and Governance Studies which is its learning and research arm. HAKI Africa is legally hosted by Haki Centre though it has already initiated the process of being registered as an NGO. Specifically, HAKI Africa promotes and protects the progressive realization of the right to development with an emphasis on socio economic rights guaranteed under Article 43 of the Constitution of Kenya. Article 43 provides for the economic and social rights which comprise of the right to the highest attainable standard of health which includes the right to healthcare services including reproductive health care; accessible and adequate housing and to reasonable standards of sanitation; freedom from hunger and to have adequate food of acceptable quality; clean and safe water in adequate quantities; social security and education.

𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐚 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

As we commemorate Madaraka Day, HAKI Africa joins all Kenyans in reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who fought for self-rule, dignity, and justice.

Madaraka reminds us that true freedom goes beyond political independence. It calls on us to build a nation where every person enjoys their rights, lives free from fear and discrimination, and has equal access to opportunities and justice.

As we celebrate 63 years since Kenya attained internal self-governance, we renew our commitment to promoting human rights, accountability, inclusion, and active citizen participation in governance.

Let us continue working together to strengthen democracy, protect fundamental freedoms, and ensure that no one is left behind.

HAKI Africa is deeply concerned by disturbing reports and images emerging from Siyu Village, Lamu East, alleging excessive use of force and police brutality against residents, including youth and school-going children. The reports and testimonies received point to acts of violence against unarmed civilians, raising serious constitutional and human rights concerns that cannot be ignored.

We further note with concern reports indicating several casualties following today’s incident. The use of force by law enforcement officers must at all times remain lawful, proportionate, and accountable. No Kenyan should be subjected to torture, assault, or degrading treatment under any circumstance.

HAKI Africa calls on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority - IPOA KENYA to immediately and independently conduct investigations into the incident to establish the facts and ensure accountability for any officers found culpable. We also urge authorities to ensure victims receive urgent medical assistance and protection from further harm or intimidation.

The Constitution of Kenya guarantees every person the right to dignity, security, and freedom from cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. These rights must be respected and upheld by all state agencies, including the security officers.

HAKI Africa stands in solidarity with the affected families and the people of Siyu as they seek justice, accountability, and respect for human rights.

Today, the court has officially discharged and released our 10 comrades including HAKI Africa's Rapid Response Officer Shipeta Mathias after the state failed to produce a single shred of evidence against them.

This arbitrary arrest was nothing more than an attempt to intimidate human rights defenders and silence those honoring our Gen Z heroes.

As HAKI Africa, we thank our legal teams, partners, and everyone who stood in solidarity with these brave defenders. The struggle for justice continues!
