15 th June 2026 I was honored to join faith leaders from around the world at the Ocean Interfaith Forum, where we discussed fisheries, coral reefs, and the moral architecture of ocean governance. The forum also launched the Faiths High Ambition Coalition for Ocean and Nature Action, a permanent alliance committed to protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030.
During my contribution, I highlighted the impact of high-seas fishing on coastal communities along the East African coast, from Lamu to Zanzibar. Declining fish stocks near shore are contributing to loss of livelihoods, increased poverty, early child marriages, rising divorce rates, and conflicts within and across borders.
I also emphasized the importance of creating grassroots awareness of the BBNJ Agreement (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction), which entered into force on 17 January 2026. This landmark treaty is the first legally binding international agreement dedicated to protecting and sustainably managing marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Together, faith communities, policymakers, and local communities can play a vital role in safeguarding our oceans for present and future generations.
