Vulvar cancer occurs at a rate 62.5% greater than pe**le cancer annually, yet only pe**le cancer is used as an excuse to perform a "preventative" surgery on a normal, functioning body part. Even though the American Cancer Society does not consider circumcision to be a valid or effective measure to prevent cancers, many healthcare providers continue to solicit infant circumcision under the guise of pe**le cancer prevention. In 1996, representatives from the American Cancer Society wrote a letter to a representative of the American Academy of Pediatrics discouraging the promotion of routine infant circumcision as a preventative measure for pe**le cancer. In fact, pe**le cancer rates in countries that do not practice circumcision are lower than the pe**le cancer rate in the United States. The letter also states that "fatalities caused by circumcision accidents may approximate the mortality rate from pe**le cancer."
