Maja Kotala Sewing Together My name is Maja Kotala and I am a founder of a program Sewing Together, which goal is to teach girl SUPPORT:

I have now successfully completed the course in Uganda - Kimuli Fashionability and in Kenya with Nairobi Girls Training Center. Regardless of the 2020 difficulties, with Mwambanga Mwashimba we opened in October a temporary Training Center for Women in Nyali Mombasa. In 2021 we opened a permanent Sewing Together place of creation in Bamburi: EKotala School for women .

Miałam wczoraj zrobić z przyjaciółką instagramowy challenge i pokazywać Wam, co robimy o każdej pełnej godzinie. Plan był świetny . . tylko przyjaciółka zaginęła w boju 😂

Ale skoro ja swoją część zrobiłam, postanowiłam się nią z Wami podzielić!

Żeby nie było zbyt egocentrycznie, oprócz tego, co robiłam przez cały dzień, przemycę Wam też kilka ciekawostek z życia w Kenii 🇰🇪

Bo czasami zwykły dzień może powiedzieć o danym miejscu więcej niż przewodnik !

A little message to the local community!

In Kenya, white people are often called „Mzungu.” I know it’s usually not meant to be offensive or disrespectful. Most of the time, it’s simply a habit.

But after hearing it 20–30 times a day, every day, it can start to feel like you’ve lost your identity.

I’m not just a . I’m a person with a name, a story, and a life here.

Sometimes I smile. Sometimes I gently explain why I don’t like it. Sometimes I simply ignore it.

This isn’t about being offended. It’s about recognizing that using someone’s name is a simple way of showing respect.

I’d love to see more people greeting others with a simple „Hi,” „Rafiki,” „Sister,” or, even better, by using their name.

Small changes in the way we speak to each other can make a big difference.

How can school in Kenya cost $20 for one child and $20,000 for another?

8-4-4 (1985–2022)

The old system was simple:
8 years Primary School (6–13 years) Standard 1–8
4 years Secondary School (14–17 years) Form 1–4
4 years University

Its philosophy?
“Can you remember the answer?”

The system focused heavily on:
• memorization
• exams
• rankings
• discipline
Many Kenyans still believe 8-4-4 produced some of the strongest students in Africa.
Others remember the pressure.

BC (Today’s Kenyan System)
Most Kenyan children now study under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Structure:
- PP1–PP2 (4–5 years)
- Grade 1–6 (6–11 years)
- Grade 7–9 (12–14 years)
- Grade 10–12 (15–17 years)

The philosophy changed from:
“Can you remember the answer?”
to
“Can you actually do the thing?”

CBC focuses more on:
• practical skills
• creativity
• entrepreneurship
• problem solving
• sports and arts

Supporters say it prepares children for real life.
Critics say parents sometimes end up doing half the homework projects themselves

International Schools
Alongside CBC, Kenya also has international schools following foreign curricula.
The most common is the British Cambridge Curriculum:
Early Years → Primary → Lower Secondary → IGCSE → A Levels
These schools are popular with:
• expatriate families
• wealthier Kenyan families
• families planning university studies abroad

What do people think?

Older generations often say:
“8-4-4 made us tough and knowledgeable.”

CBC supporters say:
“Not every child learns through exams. Some learn through building, creating and doing.”

Parents choosing international schools often say:
“We want our children to have access to universities anywhere in the world.”
