Beyond the Verdict: 7 Lessons Kenya Must Learn About Femicide

A guilty verdict matters. Accountability matters. But justice is bigger than one case and one conviction.

The judgment in Sharon Otieno's case closes one chapter, but it should also force us to ask difficult questions about ourselves.

- Why do we interrogate victims more than perpetrators?

- Why do we excuse violence in the name of love, jealousy, reputation or power?

- Why do we create narratives that blame women instead of confronting the systems that enable violence?

Sharon's murder became one of the defining moments that brought femicide into Kenya's national conversation.

It fuelled movements like and strengthened calls that continue today through .

Yet years later, women are still being killed.

Families are still grieving. Communities are still asking the same questions.

This series isn't about reliving one case.

It's about asking what Kenya must learn if we are serious about ending femicide.

Swipe through. Reflect. Start the conversation.
Because justice is not measured only by convictions.

It is measured by the lives we protect.

POV: You came for the workshop... and left with fresh ideas, new partnerships, and approximately 47 things you now want to implement. 😂

Last week, our Coordinator, Malala Luttah, represented She Huru at the AU-EU Youth Lab Capacity Building Workshop under the theme "Promoting Local Youth Actions to Advance the 2030 Agenda and Youth Well-being."

For two days, we joined inspiring youth leaders from across Kenya to exchange ideas, challenge perspectives, and explore what it takes to build stronger, more sustainable youth-led organisations.

We unpacked everything from accessing grants and sustainable financing to building partnerships that move beyond projects and create lasting impact.

One of the highlights for us was having the opportunity to share She Huru's journey as part of the AU-EU Youth Lab Representation Grant cohort. Reflecting on where we started, what we've built over the past year, and the lessons we've learned was a powerful reminder that investing in youth-led organisations doesn't just fund projects, it strengthens movements.

For us, this wasn't just another workshop. It was a full-circle moment.

Over the past year, AU-EU Youth Lab has been more than a partner. They've believed in our vision, backed our work, and created opportunities for organisations like She Huru to grow, learn, and lead with confidence.

Coming back to this space felt like reconnecting with a community that genuinely wants youth-led organisations to thrive.

We returned with notebooks full of ideas, hearts full of inspiration, and an even deeper commitment to building safer, healthier, and more inclusive communities for LBTQ-GNC persons.

To AU-EU Youth Lab, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), SOS Children's Villages, and every youth leader we met along the way, thank you for reminding us that when young people are trusted, supported, and resourced, they don't just participate in change.

They lead it.

Our hearts are full. 💜

Two weeks later, we're still overwhelmed by the love and solidarity you showed at our Resilience Fundraising Gala 2026.

To everyone who attended, purchased a ticket, donated, bought our merchandise, joined our fundraising challenges, became a strategic partner, volunteered, or cheered us on from afar - thank you.

Because of you, Beyond the Stigma continues to grow, creating safer, healthier, and more affirming spaces for LBTQ-GNC communities.

This wasn't just a gala. It was a reminder that when community comes together with purpose, incredible things happen.

Here's to building a future rooted in dignity, resilience, and collective care. The journey continues, and we're so grateful to have you with us.
