🌍🪕 TOKYO MEETS THE LUO TRADITION: ANYANGO LIVE IN MOMBASA! 🇰🇪🇯🇵

We are thrilled to welcome a true global musical pioneer to our stage! Prepare for an unforgettable evening as ANYANGO (Eriko Mukoyama), the world’s first female performer of the traditional Kenyan Nyatiti, brings her hypnotic rhythms to the coast.
Born in Tokyo, ANYANGO has spent over two decades breaking boundaries, mastering an instrument historically reserved only for Luo men. As a Japanese-Kenyan Cultural Ambassador, her music beautifully bridges continents, weaving Japanese sensibilities with deep-rooted African traditions into a sound that is entirely fresh, yet profoundly authentic.
Fresh off her latest release, “NYATITI ONDO,” and her celebrated memoir, “ANYANGO NYAR SIAYA — Nyatiti Queen,” she is ready to deliver a breathtaking cultural dialogue live under the stars.

Last evening at Alliance Française de Mombasa, we had the pleasure of hosting acclaimed author Gaëlle Bélem for a deep dive into her literary world and her vibrant home of Réunion Island.

Through humour and powerful storytelling, Gaëlle explored the cruelty and complexities of the world, showing how literature can carry deep messages while remaining engaging and accessible. She also shared her personal writing journey — balancing life as a university lecturer by day and a writer by night — and revealed that the book took two years to complete.

The discussion also gave the audience insight into Réunion Island, a small island near Madagascar with a history stretching back to the 15th century. While it later became a French colony in the 1600s, it remains part of the European Union today.

Her book, *There’s a Monster Behind the Door*, is now available in English thanks to our partners . If you missed the talk, you can still grab your copy on-site! 📖✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this enriching literary evening 📚✨
