Last month, we held a safeguarding refresher session to remind ourselves of the important role each of us plays in creating safe spaces for children, young people, and the communities we work with.

The training gave us an opportunity to revisit key safeguarding principles, reflect on our roles and responsibilities, and strengthen our ability to identify and respond appropriately to concerns.

As we continue supporting our students, we remain committed to ensuring their safety, well-being, and protection at all times.

Because safeguarding is not a one-time conversation—it is a continuous commitment.

At Hatua, we believe that when the destination is clear, the path becomes easier to find.

Our destination is scholar success, on-time graduation, employability, positive alumni outcomes, and meaningful impact.

To get there, we embrace Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI).

Through our Airtable dashboards, we use real-time data to identify opportunities for improvement. We then work closely with teams across the organization to test ideas, review results, and refine our approaches through ongoing Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles.

Rather than waiting for annual reviews, we learn and adapt continuously. We measure what matters, use evidence to guide decisions, and keep improving the systems that support our scholars and alumni.

CQI is the method. Scholar and alumni success is the reason.

Last week, our Programs Manager, Daniel Nyanga Nyagaya, had the opportunity to attend the Masana wa Afrika Afrika Convening in Johannesburg, bringing together organizations and practitioners working to improve the lives of children and caregivers across Africa.

The convening provided an opportunity to learn from others in the Early Childhood Development space, share experiences, and explore new ideas that can strengthen programming for children and families.

One particularly memorable discussion centered on the concept of "expectant fathers" and challenged participants to think differently about how child development programs are designed. If children begin learning earlier than we think, and if their earliest environments are shaped by both parents, how can we better engage fathers from the very beginning?

The convening also highlighted the incredible impact being achieved through the partnership between Masana wa Afrika, ELMA Philanthropies, and 100+ community-based organizations supporting children and families across the continent.

We are grateful for opportunities like these that encourage learning, reflection, collaboration, and ultimately stronger outcomes for the communities we serve.

May 1st was a good day.

The Hatua Mombasa Alumni Network came together for a meet & greet at the Butterfly Pavilion, and from the very beginning, the atmosphere was filled with laughter, excitement, and genuine connection.

A total of 38 alumni attended, from the Class of 2012 all the way to our newest 2025 graduates. Through games, conversations, shared stories, and plenty of mbuzi choma, old friendships were rekindled and new connections were formed.

As the afternoon came to a close, the group explored the beautiful scenery of the Butterfly Pavilion—a perfect ending to a memorable gathering.

A heartfelt thank you to Diana, Paul, Rukia, Sharon, Bonventure, and Mwanajuma for organizing such a wonderful meetup, and to every alumnus who showed up and made the day special 💙

Supporting Scholars Beyond Education

We recently held a successful National ID Registration exercise for our Gap Year Scholars in partnership with the National Registration Bureau Mombasa.

This important milestone opens doors for our scholars by enabling them to access higher education financing opportunities such as HEF and HELB, while also allowing them to fully participate as active citizens.

We are grateful to the National Registration Bureau team for their collaboration and commitment in ensuring our scholars receive this essential document.

Together, we continue empowering young people through access, opportunity, and support 💙

On Monday this week, we successfully held an engaging training session with our first-year scholars in preparation for the implementation of their First Year Volunteer Project.

The training focused on equipping them with practical skills and strategies to support learners in improving their reading and literacy abilities.

Through interactive discussions, mock sessions, and collaborative learning, participants gained valuable knowledge on learner assessments, lesson facilitation, and progress tracking.

The energy, teamwork, and passion demonstrated during the session were truly inspiring.

We are confident that they are now well equipped to return to their home primary schools and make a meaningful difference in the lives of young learners through literacy 💙

Hatua Community Libraries continues to embrace technology that improves the library experience for our users.

We are thrilled to introduce our new library counting device, currently available at the Central Library. The device is helping make check-ins easier, faster, and more organized for learners and community members visiting the library.

Member registration and access to library services are both completely free.

We encourage everyone to become part of our growing reading community and enjoy the welcoming learning spaces available at Hatua Community Libraries.

📚 Every visit matters
📚 Behind every great community is a great library

A year ago, our data was spread across multiple spreadsheets, owners, and versions—making it difficult to maintain consistency and clarity.

To improve this, we transitioned to a centralized Airtable database that now serves as a single source of truth for our M&E processes.

As Mary Oudor, Hatua’s Impact and Learning Officer, shared, this process went far beyond technology. It required deep reflection on what data is truly useful, how impact is best captured, and how systems can better support teams.

Today, we have cleaner reporting workflows, stronger dashboards, and more reliable program data—all continuously improved through user feedback and operational learning.

This journey reminded us that good M&E systems are not just about reporting tools. They are about making data meaningful, improving decision-making, and accurately representing the work behind the numbers.

Our Senior Counselling Officer, Diana Atieno, recently shared this important reflection from her experience working with young people:

“From my experience working with young people, I have realized that most of them are not really looking for advice. What many of them truly need is a safe environment where they can feel heard, supported, understood, and valued.

Most young people already have an idea of what is troubling them. Deep down, they are aware of their struggles, fears, pressure, confusion, or emotional pain. What they often lack is not solutions, but a safe space to express themselves without fear of judgment, dismissal, or criticism.

Mental health support begins with something as simple as listening.

One of the key concepts in counselling is the belief that people have the innate capacity to understand themselves and navigate through their challenges when provided with the right environment, an environment built on trust, empathy, genuineness and unconditional positive regard.

And the beautiful thing is that you do not have to be a psychologist, counsellor, or mental health practitioner to do this. At your own level, you can become a safe space for a child or young person. You can choose to listen without rushing to correct, lecture, or give answers.

Because most of the time, listening matters more than giving advice.”

💙 A powerful reminder that being present and listening can make a meaningful difference in a young person’s life.

This is what alumni support actually looks like 🌟

Tobias Abii Araba is one of our own. After school, he built a career in tech and now spends his time teaching technology to school students.

Through his initiative, TechIT Eazy, Tobias builds professional websites and digital tools completely free for grassroots organizations, community groups, youth-led projects, women-led initiatives, and small businesses. So far, he has built and hosted five websites.

Recently, when a fellow alumnus was starting a business and needed a website, Tobias stepped in and built it simply because he saw a need.

Stories like this remind us of the strength within our alumni network. We have people with real skills, ready to support and uplift one another.

Sometimes, the help we need is already among us.

Big up to Tobias for leading the way 👏
