WOMESA was formed as a Regional organization in line with SDG 5 on gender equality under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Women in Development (WID) Programme. The main objectives of the Programme are to advocate gender equ

ality in the maritime sector, integrate women into mainstream maritime activities, improve their access to maritime training and technology, increase their percentage at senior management level, promote women’s access to quality employment in the maritime sector and enhance inclusion of women in the
maritime sector through partnerships and collaboration with development partners The Association’s vision is to be a key partner for gender inclusivity in the sustainable development agenda of the maritime sector in Africa and the Mission is to promote active women participation in the maritime sector and contribute to the growth of the industry in Eastern and Southern Africa through pursuance of activities aimed at promoting gender equality.

Happy International Day for Women in Maritime, 2026!!

WOMESA President Dr. Devotha Mandanda's message in celebration of International Day of Women in Maritime:

"Today as we commemorate the International Day for Women in Maritime under this year's theme " From Policy to Practice Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence", we celebrate the invaluable contribution of women in Maritime sector across the world and particularly with in Eastern and Southern Africa. This day reminds us of the progress made toward greater inclusion and participation of women in maritime while also highlighting the need to continue promoting equal opportunities, professional growth, safe working environment and meaningful representation of women throughout the sector.

Women continue to play a vital role in shipping, port, logistics, fisheries, marine environment management, maritime law, education, administration and many other area that sustain and strengthen the maritime industry through resilience, professionalism, innovation and dedication women are shaping the future of maritime and contributing significantly to national regional and global development.

As WOMESA, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that empower women and girls to peruse maritime carrier, strengthen professional network, promote mentorship and advance gender equality with in the sector.

I commend all WOMESA National Chapter for their continued effort and commitment in many other area toward advancing the participation and visibility of women in maritime. As we mark this important phase let's continue working together to build maritime sector that is inclusive and equitable full of opportunities for all.
