While tracking pumas in Torres del Paine with my talented young Chilean guide Javi, we came across this beautiful puma (also known as a cougar, mountain lion, or panther) named Sol. 🐾

We watched Sol, the young female puma, try to eat from a guanaco kill. She moved in cautiously and then was chased off by a powerful male puma named Dark. Survival for these pumas depends upon their courage and hunting skills. They have to work to survive.

On top of that, cougars are also threatened and villainized by humans, often killed for trophies or even culled as part of government programs. These misunderstood predators are essential to their native ecosystems, and we must fight to protect them.

I came across this Iberian Lynx… on the hunt for rabbits!!

Lynx are intelligent and beautiful cats, and they are thankfully being brought back and protected in Spain and Portugal as governments and policy makers acknowledge their importance and inherent value to ecosystems. 🙏

The oceans will save us — if we let them. The vast and beautiful global ocean connects all life, generates 50% of our oxygen (one could call it the “lungs” of the planet), and acts as a massive carbon sink. The ocean is biodiverse and teeming with some 50%-80% of all life on earth. The ocean is almost like an intelligent beings itself! It is one of the best defenses we have against climate change.

BUT — we must protect our oceans and keep them healthy in order for them to help us. The oceans cannot do their jobs if they are overwhelmed with pollution, overfishing, coastal habitat destruction, and the increasingly severe effects of climate change.

Some footage I took at each “end” of the world... the North and South poles! From pole to pole — and everything in between — our Earth is connected. We must work to understand these connections, protect the environment, and do right by all the creatures (including humans!) who call this planet home. 🌍

Playful, clever, and cute… otters are such a delight to observe! 🦦 I came across this one floating and relaxing in the Salish Sea.

Otters around the world are facing habitat loss and depletion of their food sources — we must protect aquatic ecosystems to protect otters, and vice versa!

I caught this bee working hard collecting pollen! 🐝

Often overlooked, pollinators like bees and butterflies are ESSENTIAL to ecosystems. A staggering 90% of wild plants and 75% of the world's crops depend on animal pollination... our world would collapse without pollinators! This makes it all the more concerning that many of our pollinators are threatened with extinction due to pesticides, mono-cropping, pollution, and climate change.

Luckily there are a few steps we can take to do our part to help save pollinators:

🌸 Plant a mix of native plants in your garden that bloom in different seasons
🚫 Don't use pesticides in your garden and lawn
🧑‍🌾 Support local, organic farmers
🌎 Reduce your carbon footprint
📣 Share your knowledge and commitment to pollinator protection with others!

Perhaps the most epic capture of an orca I’ve ever taken!!! We came across this pod of orcas hunting a seal — it was unclear whether or not the seal that can be seen in the orca’s mouth got away in the end.

Orcas are one of the world’s most intelligent and socially evolved animals — from greeting ceremonies to sporting “fashion trends” to elaborate play, they display a truly remarkable intelligence. They are also fearsome predators, but despite their intelligence and power, they are threatened nonetheless. Notably, the Southern Resident Killer Whales in the Pacific Northwest are critically endangered and face a high probability of extinction if their conditions don’t change. The decline of their man food source, the chinook salmon, is the primary driver of their decline, along with pollution and disturbance from ocean vessels.

On we reflect on the myriad species around the world who are at risk of being lost to extinction, largely due to human activity and industrial development. Just as it is in our power to put entire species at risk of extinction, it is in our power to change course and save these animals. According to the IUCN, at least 40% of animals, insects, and plants are at risk of extinction across the world. We urgently need leaders around the world to take action to start protecting crirtical habitat, take action on climate, and ban the needless killing of animals for trophies and entertainment.

We all live and breathe because of our global oceans. Our weather, much of our oxygen, and so much of the food that sustains us comes from healthy oceans. Oceans are integral and essential for life on earth. The sea also feeds our soul and our quest for peace, adventure and exploration. The Orca (wolf of the sea) and the Sea Wolf (wolf of the earth) illustrate the beautiful interconnectedness of all life. Here is Takaya, sea wolf extraordinaire, and a Biggs Orca. Both depend upon the riches of the sea for survival.

Can you spot the Heermaan's gulls amid the feeding chaos?

With dark orange/red beaks and deep grey plumage, they stand out from the surrounding Glaucous-winged gulls in this video. The Heermaan's gulls are special in that they perform a rare "reverse" migration: they breed in the southern United States and Mexico and then migrate north to Canada for the non-breeding season!

Migratory birds are one of nature's little miracles. About 40% of the world's birds embark on this twice-annual journey across vast distances, a journey that is dangerous and taxing: an estimated half of migratory birds die during migration. With that, we have all the more reason to ensure that we protect their habitats from destruction and pollution as migratory birds are highly vulnerable to habitat loss and pollution.
