Why does ICA invest in economic justice?

Because climate change doesn't affect everyone equally.

For communities with fewer economic resources, every climate shock becomes harder to survive, recover from, and adapt to. A flood isn't just about rising water. A drought isn't just about failed rains. Rising food prices aren't simply inflation. They are daily realities that can deepen poverty, widen inequality, and leave already marginalized communities even further behind.

That is why we believe economic vulnerability is itself a climate risk.
Building livelihoods, strengthening food security, increasing savings, supporting collective ownership, and creating sustainable sources of income are not separate from climate action. They are among the most powerful forms of climate adaptation.

At ICA, this is the vision behind initiatives like Eco-Dada. We are investing in communities that can withstand climate shocks, recover with dignity, and shape their own futures.

Because resilience is not measured only by surviving disasters, but also by whether people have the economic power to recover, adapt, and thrive.

The journey has officially begun!

Last week, we were incredibly excited to welcome the first Eco-Dada Cohort to Eco-Dada Farm for their very first farm visit and practical session.

The visit marked an important milestone. Participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the farm, learn more about our vision, and gain hands-on experience in organically transplanting capsicum seedlings.

What inspired us most was witnessing the power of collective action. In less than two hours, one acre of land was transformed through teamwork, laughter, hope, and determination. Every seedling planted represented more than a future harvest. It represented our shared belief that together, we can build sustainable livelihoods, strengthen food security, and create feminist economic alternatives that leave no one behind.

The day was not all work. Participants also enjoyed fresh vegetables harvested from our Green Basket Initiative, a reminder that even the earliest investments in this journey are already beginning to nourish our community.

This is only the beginning.

Over the coming months, we will take you along this journey! The small victories that deserve celebration, the inevitable challenges that will teach us resilience, the lessons we learn, and, we hope, the abundant harvests that lie ahead.

One question now excites all of us:

Can capsicum be grown successfully using ecological farming practices in the semi-arid climate of Malindi?

Over the next three months, we will find out together.

🏳️‍🌈 One of the biggest challenges we faced at Eco-Dada Farm was access to a reliable water source. Today, we are incredibly excited to share that we have successfully completed the drilling of our borehole, as well as the installation of the pump and solar-powered water system!

Reliable water is the backbone of any irrigation project, and this milestone means we can now grow food throughout the year without depending on seasonal rainfall in our semi-arid landscape.

☀️Our decision to power the borehole with solar energy was intentional. As a feminist climate justice organization, we are committed to building a farming model that is not only productive, but also environmentally sustainable. By investing in renewable energy, we are reducing our environmental footprint while strengthening the long-term resilience of our farm.

This achievement brings us one step closer to our vision of creating sustainable livelihoods and economic opportunities for LBQ communities while strengthening ICA's long-term sustainability through Eco-Dada.🏳️‍🌈

Happy to share that this week, we harvested our green leafy vegetables for the second time under Eco-Dada’s Green Basket Initiative! 🌱

This round, we were able to share the harvest with nearly 50 community members in Malindi.

So far, so good! We are proud to be contributing, even in a small way, to strengthening food security in q***r community households.

Grown by q***rs, for q***rs..🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 this is also what q***r joy looks like: nourishment, care, and collective resilience. 🌈💚

Happy Pride Month, q***r siblings! 👋🏾🌈🌱

Today, we are celebrating something deeply special. Our first vegetable harvest under Eco-Dada’s Green Basket Initiative!

This initiative was created to strengthen food security within q***r households, and today we are proud to begin sharing this harvest with our q***r siblings across Kilifi County and Mombasa County.

This is proof of what is possible when we invest in community, land, and collective care: we can grow our own food. And the best part? Our first harvest is a bumper one! That means we get to share with even more q***r siblings across both counties than we had anticipated.

This is what q***r joy can look like! Nourishment, dignity, community, and collective abundance. 🌿✨

We are so excited for the beginning of this journey, one that is already bringing us so much hope and joy.

And the journey continues! Our onions are also thriving. Today marks Day 36 of 90, and we keep pushing forward. 🧅💚

We are excited to share that we successfully held the onboarding for Eco-Dada Cohort 1 in Mombasa, bringing together participants from Mombasa and Kilifi counties for the beginning of what will be a transformative 3-year journey.

Eco-Dada is ICA’s flagship ecological farming and economic empowerment initiative, created to build sustainable livelihoods, food sovereignty, climate resilience, and collective prosperity for LBQ women and non-binary persons.

Over the past few days, ICA Foundation Kenya has been participating in the 2nd KALRO Scientific Conference and Innovation Expo 2026, focusing on learning from farmers, researchers, civil society organizations, and private sector actors working to build resilient and sustainable food systems.

One of our key areas of interest has been soil health. We have gained valuable insights into compost making, organic fertilizers and foliars, biochar, eco-minerals such as vermiculite, integrated pest management, mixed farming, value addition, the use of drone technology in agriculture and crop value chain.

What has made this experience particularly valuable is learning directly from people with practical, hands-on experience. Their knowledge, successes, and lessons will help us strengthen our own ecological farming journey through .

Many of these practices and innovations can be adapted and implemented at our farm, and will help us improve sustainability, productivity, and climate resilience.

Beyond the learning, we continue to build meaningful connections and partnerships that will add value to our work long after the conference ends.

We are excited to bring these lessons home and continue growing a model that advances climate resilience, food security, and economic empowerment in our communities.

The World Is Being Warned to Prepare for El Niño. Are We Ready?

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has confirmed that El Niño conditions are developing, with an 80% likelihood of forming between June and August 2026 and a high chance of persisting through the end of the year. Scientists warn that this could increase the risk of extreme weather events, including heatwaves, droughts, floods, crop failures, water shortages, and disease outbreaks across different parts of the world.

For Kenya and the wider East African region, this warning is about people, livelihoods, food systems, health, and the communities already living on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

Climate disasters do not affect everyone equally. Women, low-income households, displaced communities, and marginalized groups often bear the greatest burden while having the fewest resources to recover.

This is why climate preparedness matters.

We must strengthen early warning systems, invest in community resilience, protect food and water security and ensure that no community is left behind in climate adaptation and disaster response.

The climate crisis is no longer a future threat but a present reality.

Preparedness saves lives.
