We predominatly help rehabilitate and improve lives of the disadvantaged members of society focusing (but not limited) to women and children. The Mungu Anaweza Project is a charity registered in the Uk which rescues street children living in Mombasa, Kenya. The Joseph Centre which opened in 2017 is situated just 5 minutes from the municipal dump site in Mwakirunge - home to many mums and their c
hildren. The aim of the centre is to teach the mums skills to enable them to make a living, leave the dump and provide a home for themselves and their children. Gap Kenya also runs a feeding programme where we visit the children on the dump sites to provide them with bread and juice.
2. We have a day care centre several kilometres from Mombasa centre - Stepping Stones - where the children receive food, showers, simple teaching, recreation and are able to wash their clothes. The purpose of this centre is: a) to teach the children routine, discipline, and to show them love in preparation for leaving street life, be cared for by foster parents and go to school. To provide a place where children who do not want to leave the streets can access basic care, food and teaching.
3. We have a family home where children who choose to leave the streets are provided with love and guidance from 'nurture parents', food, clothing, education and medical care, all within the family setting. All the children we work with are given love and respect and encouraged to be 'the best they can be'. Known as 'Chokora' (vermin) by some people, we endeavour to help the children see themselves as valued and try to increase their own self worth.
