WeRise Africa held a meeting with the referral partners at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to reactivate the referral partners platform under the protecting of women in the frontlines of freedom in mombasa project. The meeting focused on reviving the platform to strengthen coordination and support for WHRDs.

During the engagement, the partners reaffirmed their commitment to support WeRise Africa and the WHRDs. The discussion emphasized on the need for stronger communication, coordination, and follow-up among all stakeholders involved.

The referral partners platform brings together all the government agencies and civil society organizations and plays a critical role in ensuring coordinated support, timely referrals, and protection for Women Human Rights Defenders.
The meeting further clarified how referral partners operate, the referral process, and how WeRise Africa can support partners once cases are referred, strengthening the overall referral pathway for WHRDs.

WeRise Africa supported a wellness session for women human rights defenders on the frontlines of freedom in Mombasa county.

By recognizing burnout, trauma and fear for their security, this session came at a time when we need to allow WHRD’s to protect themselves, reclaim safe digital spaces and continue their advocacy with increased confidence, and resilience.

WeRise Africa joined other stakeholders in Mombasa County in marking the final day of the 16 Days of Activism by participating in a powerful youth-led discussion under the theme “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials.” Panel II emphasized community-driven advocacy, the importance of knowing our rights, and the need to support youth especially around mental health and inclusivity for PWDs.

The session highlighted that real change grows from young people speaking boldly, learning from elders, and standing united. The key message was simple: our voices, knowledge, and courage remain essential tools in advancing human rights every day.

WeRise Africa was part of an insightful event on men’s engagement in the fight against GBV as part of the 16 Days of Activism.
Powerful discussion on how men can play a meaningful role by challenging harmful behaviour, promoting respect, and setting the right example both offline and online.

As discussed, boys learn from what they see, so positive role modelling is key. It was a powerful reminder that men have a big part to play in creating safer spaces for women and girls.

We successfully concluded a two-day Digital Security Training for Women Human Rights Defenders in Mombasa, an inspiring and empowering space dedicated to strengthening digital resilience. When women understand digital safety, entire communities rise with them.

The training brought together WHRDs to learn, exchange experiences, and enhance their capacity to navigate and respond to digital threats, leaving participants better equipped to protect digital rights.

Our conclusion featured a collaborative partner engagement session with IPOA Kenya, KNCHR (HakiKNCHR), Kituo Cha Sheria, FIDA Kenya, and the National Legal Aid Service (NLAS). They shared available support mechanisms and addressed key concerns on digital threats and online harassment.

Stronger together in protection.

Today, WeRise Africa successfully convened a Capacity Strengthening Workshop for Grievance Redress Committee members drawn from the different sections of Lot 1 of the Mombasa–Mtwapa (A7) Road Project.

The meeting aimed to strengthen their capacity in grievance handling, improve coordination, and reinforce their role as a critical link between the community and project implementers, as well in handling Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (SEA/H/GBV) cases, as well as monitoring environmental and social impacts along the project corridor.

Members openly shared the challenges they face on the ground, and together they agreed on practical next steps to improve reporting, coordination, and community awareness. The workshop helped the GRC members feel more equipped, more confident, and better connected as they carry out their roles.
