As we took a break from our planting KPC Phase 3, we are still on the ground preparing nursery seeds for upcoming planting activities.
Setting up a mangrove nursery is a crucial step to ensure the success of future restoration efforts. Mangrove propagules (seeds) are typically ready for transplanting from a nursery to the field after 3 to 8 months. This period allows the seedlings to establish a strong root system and develop at least 2–4 leaves, which are key indicators of their readiness for transplantation. The exact duration varies depending on the mangrove species; some species may require up to a year in the nursery to develop adequately and improve their chances of survival once planted in their natural habitat.
Proper care during this nursery phase—including appropriate watering, shading, and protection from pests—helps produce healthy seedlings that can withstand environmental stresses when moved to the field.
Key Nursery and Planting Details:
Optimal Timing: Seedlings should be roughly 30–50 cm tall (about 1-2 feet) before they are robust enough to handle the ocean salinity and wave action.
Transplanting Process: Seedlings are transported in pots and planted 1–2 feet apart in muddy areas.
Best Season: Out-planting is often done at the beginning of the rainy season to provide necessary fresh water to the young plants.
Species Variation: Red mangroves grow quickly, whereas others may take longer in nurseries to prepare for saline environments.
