The High Court drew a line in the sand last month when it pronounced so abundantly clearly that the Lamu night curfew was and IS dead. Yet, the State is actively choosing to break the law.

That's why today MUHURI and our partners took to the streets of Lamu because we refuse to live under a government that treats judicial orders like optional suggestions. This is a direct assault on the freedom of the people of Lamu, fueled by systemic discrimination and institutional corruption. We can read through the noise or lack thereof.

Let us be entirely clear to those in power who think they are above the law: oh, you are not. Please. The law exists to protect the vulnerable from the tyranny of the powerful. By ignoring the courts, you have abandoned your legitimacy.

And we are not letting this go. We will not look the way, if you are hoping we will get weary and abandon course. If you choose to violate the Constitution as you have, we will use every single mechanism within that Supreme Law to hold you personally accountable. Consider this a promise, that we are bringing this fight straight to your doorstep.

Abundant endless thanks to the people of Lamu who showed up today in defiance of this oppression. Your courage is the only thing standing between justice and state-sponsored lawlessness. The illegal curfew must fall, and it will. Oh it will. We are so close. This close 🤏

On May 26th, MUHURI convened a strategic dialogue on conflict sensitivity and human rights in Lamu. The session brought together youth, women, human rights defenders (HRDs), and journalists to address critical issues surrounding religious profiling and faith-based stereotypes. Participants explored actionable strategies for HRDs to counter these biases and enhance community protection mechanisms, while crucially prioritizing their own safety and security in the field. Not very good news this morning, again.... A desperate SOS call has just come in outta the infamous cells.

Our rapid response officer, comrade Francis Auma, has been arrested and detained just a few minutes ago at Aldina Police Station in Jomvu, Mombasa.

Auma went to inquire about a cash bail for a case MUHURI is actively following up on. Instead of receiving cooperation, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) harassed him before slapping him with a completely arbitrary, baseless arrest. He is currently being processed, and we don't know exactly where this is headed.

We will not be very careful about this matter. The police in this country have a very scary, disturbing, and ugly reputation of arresting and forcefully disappearing human rights defenders. And therefore, we are not paranoid. We know exactly what this brutal system is capable of.

But here is what the system needs to remember. WE the people are far more powerful than the powers that be.
Release Francis IMMEDIATELY AND UNCONDITIONALLY. Do not push us. You do not want to test our resolve.

Habibo Ibrahim says she was violently assaulted at Marikiti Market in Mombasa on April 30, 2026, sustaining grievous injuries that continue to affect her physically and emotionally. Despite reporting the matter at Mombasa Central Police Station and the alleged perpetrators being arrested, no prosecution has followed.

Instead, the victim and her family say they have been trapped in a cycle of delays, referrals and frustration while searching for justice.

No victim of violence should be forced to beg the justice system to act. Justice delayed, ignored or buried in procedure only deepens the suffering of survivors.

We are very concerned by the apparent inaction surrounding this matter and we want a fair, timely and transparent process for the victim. We're closely monitoring this case, and we are keen to take it up if need be. And very soon.

As we are writing this, at least 16 people from Siyu Island in Lamu East have been brutalized by people they can't identify. We believe the president or his office knows who these people are.

There are so many negative things happening in Kenya right now, and those sworn to protect us have seemingly signed our death warrants.
At 5:00 AM today, the peaceful Lamu residents were violently shaken awake by the terrifying sounds of gunshots, whips, and state-sanctioned brutality.

Masked thugs in combat gear, wielding high-grade assault rifles, believed to be officers from the special forces, invaded civilian homes. They dragged innocent Kenyans from their beds and whipped them indiscriminately. They said nothing, and they didn't even try to give any explanations. They came to maim, and rain pure, unadulterated terror.

This is a monstrous violation of fundamental human rights, and an absolute breakdown of the rule of law.

We have confronted the area police boss but he claims total ignorance of the operation. We reject this cowardly evasion. If the police chief doesn't know, then who is commanding these beasts? Who authorized this savagery on Kenyan soil?

We demand answers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority - IPOA KENYA, the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service and President William Samoei Ruto
Is this a deliberate, state-led operation to obliterate the population of Lamu, or has the government completely surrendered the region to terrorists?

Right now, families in Lamu East are sitting in their homes bleeding, terrified to step outside, wondering if the masked men will return this afternoon.

The meeting was attended by 30 participants, including community leaders, youth leaders, religious leaders, and government representatives. We aimed to deepen understanding of the role of CSOs and HRDs, and explore how communities and government can work alongside them to strengthen human rights and civic space.

Following the suspension of the night curfew in Lamu by the High Court on Thursday, May 21st, MUHURI and other human rights organizations, and the community leaders from Lamu Sunday held a press conference to once again amplify this message to the law enforcement agencies and the people affected.

For 12 years, oh yes 12 long years, the people of Lamu, parts of Tana River and Garissa counties have been restricted to movements during the day only, because the government decided the region was so insecure to allow citizens to move and operate at night.

For 12 trying years, the fishermen, farmers, ordinary people seeking medical emergencies, business people, pregnant women, and anyone else were not able to move into and out of Lamu from 7 PM to 7 AM.

Women have suffered, the elderly have suffered, we have lost lives that were preventable because police and the KDF have erected permanent roadblocks to implement this illegal, curfew.

Businesses have stalled and the potential of the people of Lamu and surrounding areas has been dwarfed by the government. The people of Lamu have been profiled and mistreated so badly you'd think they are second-rate citizens.

We thank the High Court in Garsen for its fair ruling, and for hearing our concerns and coming to the rescue.

Now, we are not naive. The security agencies have shown time and again that they can disobey court orders, unfortunately. But always, that doesn't age well. We are so much aware that the multi agency security teams on the Lamu-Mombasa Highway will be tempted to disobey this order from the court. We are ready to go to court for contempt of court, and even institute citizen arrest against individuals who might do so. This country is governed by the Constitution of Kenya, and no one is above the law. We all must obey the law.

Freedom is here! Thank heavens!

We got some good news!

Yesterday MUHURI's rapid response officer, Comrade Francis Auma and Director Khelef Khalifa, in the company of Wallid Sketty of VOCAL Africa, were at Garsen High Court. Our team was following up on the case lodged by the Lamu community and supported by us among other human rights groups, on the illegal curfew and night restriction on travel in the counties of Lamu and Garissa and Tana River.

Now this is where it gets juicy.

The High Court granted us our prayers of suspending the curfew and any travel restrictions in the affected area until this case is fully heard and determined. We have already served the court order to the notorious Gamba police station, which has not been very kind to the residents on this issue.

Finally we see light and hope, and freedom. The curfew has been in place for more than a decade and how happy we are that the manacles of slavery are beginning to break loose. May justice be our shield and defender, till the end!

We took to the highway and blocked the Mtwapa Bridge today because the government is pricing Kenyans out of their own lives, which we can't allow to continue. Something must give.

The recent hike in fuel prices has grounded the transport sector and triggered a nationwide matatu strike, which has essentially left millions of everyday people stranded and unable to survive.

To the motorists, matatu drivers, and all Kenyans who joined us on the highway to protest, honked their horns, stood with us, thank you. Thank you very much. Your solidarity is very important in this shared national crisis.

Now, the government must reconsider these price hikes immediately. You cannot run a country by paralyzing its people.

This is a public service announcement to all the residents and motorists operating on Mombasa-Malindi Highway that on Monday, leo Jumatatu, May 18th, tupatane barabarani. Kuna shughuli ya haja na inatuhitaji sisi sote.
