Ahead of International Day of the Girl , 4 brilliant Girl Advocates from and stepped into executive leadership roles to challenge stereotypes and advocate for their future.

Through a partnership between Plan International Kenya (Kwale Program Unit) and Muslim women Advancement of Rights and Protection , these young leaders participated in the initiative, taking over top offices across Kwale County:

- County Commissioner – Ministry of Interior and National Administration
- County Drought Coordinator – National Drought Management Authority (NDMA)
- County Non-Communicable Disease Coordinator – County Department of Health Services

During these takeovers, the advocates engaged directly with top administrators to discuss leadership journeys, navigate career pathways, and challenge the societal norms that limit young women. Crucially, the girls used their platform to address real issues affecting their daily lives—calling for immediate action on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and the impacts of climate change in their communities.

After stepping into these roles and delivering powerful calls to action, these young advocates proved once again that leadership has no gender.

The sky is the limit. Empowering a girl is empowering a nation. 🇰🇪✨

🌱GREENING KWALE: MWARP JOINS THE CALL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION 🌍

Today, Muslim women Advancement of Rights and Protection joined partners and stakeholders across Kwale County in the launch of , a week-long series of conservation activities leading up to on Saturday, 10 October 2026.

The week was officially launched by the Kwale County Commissioner, bringing together government departments and agencies, civil society organisations, youth groups and other partners committed to and our environment.

As an organisation working with communities across Kwale, MWARP is proud to be part of this collective effort to promote environmental , and resilient . Environmental conservation is not only about planting ; it is about protecting the that sustain our families, livelihoods and future generations.

Throughout the week, communities and partners will take part in a range of activities, including tree planting in and , planting and ecosystem restoration, tree planting, of public spaces and towns, initiatives, and planting trees along road reserves.

These actions provide an opportunity to bring environmental responsibility closer to communities while encouraging schools, young people, families and local leaders to become active champions of conservation.

MWARP joins fellow partners, including SambaSports Youth Agenda and Plan International Kenya, alongside government agencies and communities, in strengthening collective action towards a greener, cleaner and more climate-resilient Kwale County.

As we look forward to the Mazingira Day celebrations on 10 October, we remain committed to supporting community-led environmental action and contributing to Kenya’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

📢 MWARP Participates in Kwale AYP Technical Working Group Engagement

On 1 October 2026, Muslim women Advancement of Rights and Protection participated in the Kwale County Adolescents and Young Persons (AYP) Technical Working Group (TWG) engagement held at Pride Inn Diani. The meeting was organised by the Kwale County Department of Health Services, with support from NAYA – Network for Adolescent and Youth of Africa.

came together to deliberate on the key affecting AYPs in accessing services and identify areas to inform the development of the Kwale County AYP Strategy.
The discussions focused on six key priorities: services; return to and support for mothers; engagement of , , and ; aggregation and use; and protection in cases.

A key discussion was the need to strengthen the linkage between National ID and birth certificate registration and SHA enrolment, particularly for AYPs and teenage mothers, to facilitate smoother access to services at health facilities.

The engagement reaffirmed the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration, youth-responsive health services, stronger and systems, and evidence-based programming to improve the health and wellbeing of adolescents and young people in Kwale County.

🌍 WOMEN SHAPING PEACE, FROM COMMUNITIES TO THE NATIONAL STAGE

On 24 September 2026, Muslim women Advancement of Rights and Protection participated in the Quarterly Coordination Meeting of the National Steering Committee (NSC) on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), convened with support from Act Change Transform, Kenya at Emara Ole-Sereni Hotel, Nairobi.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from , , , society, -led organisations and development to reflect on progress in implementing Kenya’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (KNAP III) and strengthen collective preparedness ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Discussions highlighted the need to localise KNAP III, strengthen early and early systems, invest in the WPS agenda, protect women’s in electoral processes, and move beyond participation to ensure have meaningful influence in and .

As part of the experience-sharing session, MWARP shared updates on its community peace and resilience work, including preparedness, community sensitisation, information-sharing and collaboration with county government actors. MWARP also highlighted its preparations for the 2027 electoral period, with a focus on supporting , and meaningful participation within communities.

The meeting reinforced the importance of strong coordination across national and county governments, security actors, civil society, women and youth organisations, peacebuilders and development partners to turn WPS commitments into action.

Women are not just beneficiaries of peace, they are , , and decision-makers. Their must be at the centre of building safer, more inclusive and resilient communities. ✊🏽🌍

🌧️ STRENGTHENING EL NIÑO PREPAREDNESS IN KWALE COUNTY

Today, Plan International Kenya, in partnership with Muslim women Advancement of Rights and Protection and the Kenya Red Cross Society – Kwale Branch, supported the dissemination of the Kwale County El Niño Contingency Plan 2027 to Members of the Kwale County Assembly at Jacaranda Beach Resort, Diani.

The engagement was held in collaboration with the Office of the County Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor, National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), and the Office of the Kwale County Commissioner, bringing together key and government leadership and stakeholders to strengthen , and early in anticipation of potential El Niño-related impacts.

The session provided an opportunity to present findings from the Long Rains Assessment, highlight sector-specific , discuss proposed preparedness and interventions, and outline the resources required to implement the Contingency Plan.

A key outcome was the strong support expressed by Members of the County Assembly, under the leadership of the Deputy Clerk of the Assembly, for implementation of the Contingency Plan. Members committed to supporting the proposed 2% emergency preparedness and response allocation in the 2026/2027 County budget and advocating for the inclusion of priority programmes and interventions outlined in the Contingency Plan in the next supplementary budget.

This commitment reinforces the importance of linking risk assessment, contingency planning, budgeting and coordinated action to ensure that Kwale County is better prepared to respond to potential disasters and protect vulnerable communities.

Judiciary and JSC Hold Public Participation Forum in Lamu on FY 2027/28 Budget

The Kenya Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) commenced public participation on their proposed FY 2027/28 budget and Medium-Term Expenditure Framework in Lamu County, giving residents an opportunity to shape priorities for the administration of .

The forum was led by Registrar of the Judicial Service Commission Hon. Robert Kibor, Registrar in the Office of the Chief Justice Hon. Faith Muguongo, and Judiciary Director of Finance Beatrice Kamau. It brought together members of the public, justice sector stakeholders, and Court Users Committee members, who submitted , , and areas through both oral and written submissions.

Muslim women Advancement of Rights and Protection participated as a member of the Lamu Court Users Committee, representing community interests and reinforcing its role as a between grassroots and the . Our engagement ensured that priorities affecting the it serves were reflected in the submissions made to the Judiciary.

This exercise, anchored in constitutional and statutory requirements for public participation in financial matters, forms part of a nationwide exercise to gather public input ahead of the finalisation of the Judiciary's budget estimates.

🌧️ READY TO RESPOND: STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS FOR EL NINO RAINS

As communities prepare for the expected El Niño rains, preparedness cannot wait until disaster strikes.

On 22nd and 23rd September 2026, Muslim women Advancement of Rights and Protection (MWARP), through the Sponsorship Programme supported by Plan International Kenya, conducted Disaster Preparedness Forums in and Sub-Counties to strengthen the of frontline and ensure communities are better prepared to to .

The forums brought together key stakeholders involved in preparedness and response, creating a platform to strengthen , share and identify practical that can be taken before, during and after emergencies.

A key focus of the forums was Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in emergencies, recognising that situations can increase the vulnerability of , , and other at-risk groups to sexual and reproductive health challenges.

Through the discussions, stakeholders strengthened their understanding of the need to:

✅ Integrate SRHR into emergency preparedness and response plans, ensuring essential services continue even during disasters.

✅ Strengthen referral and coordination mechanisms so survivors and individuals requiring urgent SRHR services can access timely and appropriate support.

✅ Protect women, girls and adolescents from increased risks of GBV and other protection concerns during emergencies.

✅ Identify and address gaps in emergency response, particularly around access to essential health information, services and referrals.

✅ Strengthen collaboration among frontline actors, ensuring health, community, security, disaster management and other stakeholders work together when emergencies occur.

✅ Promote early preparedness and community-level action, rather than waiting for the impacts of heavy rains and flooding to escalate.

The forums also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to reflect on lessons from previous emergencies and identify practical measures that can strengthen community resilience and ensure that no one is left behind when disaster strikes.

The result is stronger preparedness, clearer coordination and a shared commitment among frontline stakeholders to ensure communities are Ready to Respond.

As the approach, the message is clear: preparedness saves lives, protects dignity and ensures essential services remain accessible when communities need them most.

Together, we are strengthening resilient communities that are prepared to act, respond and recover.
