🌍 PLASTIC WASTE MASTER- PLAN ENGAGEMENT WITH UNDP

Today, Mtopanga River Conservation CBO had the pleasure of hosting a team from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the organization site.

The visit provided an opportunity for the UNDP team to learn more about our community-led efforts in plastic waste management, environmental conservation and restoration of the Mtopanga River ecosystem.

During the engagement, we took the team through some of the key activities undertaken by our organization, including:

♻️ Plastic waste collection and recovery – mobilizing the community to collect plastic waste and prevent it from ending up in drainage systems, rivers and the ocean.

♻️ Waste sorting and material recovery – demonstrating how collected waste can be separated and prepared for recycling and other productive uses.

♻️ Plastic waste innovation – showcasing our efforts to transform discarded plastic bottles into useful products, including our innovative boat made from plastic bottles, demonstrating that waste can be turned into a resource.

🌊 Mtopanga River restoration and conservation – explaining our ongoing efforts to restore the river, reduce pollution and protect the connection between the river, coastal environment and marine ecosystem.

👥 Community awareness and participation – engaging residents, youth and other stakeholders in environmental conservation and responsible waste management.

💼 Livelihood opportunities through waste management – highlighting the potential of waste recovery and recycling to create employment and income opportunities for community members.

The UNDP team also engaged us on the challenges we face in implementing our initiatives and discussed areas where development partners can support community organizations to strengthen plastic waste management and environmental conservation.

We are grateful for the interest shown by UNDP in our grassroots work. The team appreciated the efforts being made by Mtopanga River Conservation CBO and expressed their willingness to collaborate and explore opportunities for partnership whenever support is required.

🌍 TURNING COMMUNITY ACTION INTO CLIMATE RESILIENCE

Today, we extended our environmental conservation and community resilience initiative to Vikwatani Level 4 Hospital in Kisauni Sub-County, where we conducted a thorough clean-up of the hospital compound.

The exercise focused particularly on areas affected by overgrown grass and vegetation,compound which creates an unsafe and unhygienic environment for patients, healthcare workers and visitors.

🌧️ PREPARING BEFORE THE RAINS
As we anticipate the long rains, this intervention forms part of our preventive and preparedness approach to flooding and public health risks.
Overgrown vegetation conceals areas where rainwater accumulates and remains stagnant. Such stagnant water can provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the potential risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Rather than waiting for flooding and its associated challenges to occur, we believe in acting early, working together and building resilient communities.

We sincerely appreciate the management and staff of Vikwatani Level 4 Hospital for giving us the opportunity to contribute to a safer and healthier environment within the facility.

CITY FLOOD INTELLIGENCE DASHBOARD (CFID)
We are proud to have participated in a two days engagement forum on City Flood Intelligence Dashboard (CFID) – Phase IV initiative organized by GIZ – Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) in collaboration with the County Government of Mombasa at KMFRI Facility.

For CFID to be more effective,local knowledge and community perspectives towards building a smarter, more inclusive, and climate-resilient Mombasa must be put into consideration. Our participation reflects our commitment to ensuring that flood risk management solutions are informed by the experiences of the communities most affected.

The workshop brought together government departments, technical experts, and community stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, improve flood early warning systems, and enhance the use of data and innovation in addressing climate-related challenges.

We remain committed to promoting environmental conservation, community resilience, and sustainable development for present and future generations.
Together, we can build a safer and more resilient Mombasa.

CONSULUTATIVE MEETING

Had a successful consultative meeting that brought together officials from COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF MOMBASA Department of Blue economy and Fisheries, Mtopanga River Conservation CBO and KENHA, at our site at pirates beach.

The aim of the meeting was to explore on the possibility of relocating our Material Recovering Site to a new location subject to approval from lands department

Kenha on its side stressed the need on working on timelines in order to deliver on their mandate of developing Mombasa/ Malindi Road network currently under construction.

Chief officer Dr. Roseline and Director Abdul of from the fisheries department noted with appreciation the good work our organization is engaged in and promise to fast track the process of issuance of TOL through the relevant department.

PARTICIPATORY CLIMATE RISK ASSESSMENT FORUM
Honoured to among KISAUNI community opinion and inspiring leaders who took part in a two day FLocca(Financing Locally- led Climate Action) program at Mtopanga Catholic Church.

The objective of the exercise was to identify Climatical challenges within the wards that each participant's was representing and generate tangible solutions.

At the end of the session a joint adaptive risk action plan for KISAUNI-SUBCOUNTY was generated.

DESTINY ENHANCEMENT GRADUATION PROGRAM

A 2days graduation ceremony event at our graduation centre ground which was sponsored by COFAD where over 600 graduants who community members graduating and receiving certificates after successfully completing a 6months waste management training program.

Of more valuable to this noble initiative was to see youths drawn each sub-county in Mombasa who could have otherwise chose crime and negative activities joining the program and be able to benefit with skills that boosted their creativity hence be able to innovate waste materials to valuable products.

INTERGRATION OF CORAL REEF ASSESSMENT OUTPUTS INTO MOMBASA MPA MANAGEMENT PLAN
Presentation of findings and outputs assessments of Mombasa Marine Protected Area (MPA), which intents to directly inform and support evidence-based decision-making within the management planning process.

The successfully invent event took place at MNARANI BEACH CLUB, KILIFI where in attracted different stakeholders in blue economy industry.

The platform gave us an opportunity to highlight how the river affects the coral reefs and how our nature base solutions shall be incorporated in the management planning and implementation.

COMMEMORATING WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY 2026
This year's exercise was subject to pomp and colour as the kenya Navy team, mixed and interacted with the rest of the community members in beach clean-up at Jomokenyatta public beach.

Upon the end of the exercise, the total number of waste collected was 31 tonnes.

This year theme is: 🌍 “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
