Imagine building your home with your own hands.

Planting a garden. Raising your children. Burying your parents.

And yet, living every single day with the fear that someone could come and tell you, " This land is not yours. That has been the reality for the people of Vikobani Settlement in Mombasa for decades.

Today, that reality is changing.

The County Government has officially begun the planning, surveying, and titling of Vikobani Settlement, the formal start of a process that will, for the first time, give residents legal recognition of the land they have called home for generations.

This did not happen overnight. It happened because a community refused to give up. Because they showed up to meetings, to court hearings, to county and national offices year after year, even when the doors felt permanently closed. And because Haki Yetu walked alongside them, organising, advocating, and holding the government accountable every step of the way.

Two community-led committees, a Settlement Executive Committee and a Grievance Committee, have now been formed to ensure the process is fair, transparent, and leaves no one behind.

A certificate of title is more than paper.

a) It means a mother in Vikobani can sleep tonight without fear of eviction.

b) It means a father can look his children in the eye and say, " This home is yours.

c) It means a community's dignity so long denied is finally, formally recognised.

The road was long. The work is not yet finished. But today, Vikobani's future looks different.
