Haki Yetu, with support from GIZ/CPS, is facilitating the development of the Kwale County Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) Action Plan to strengthen access to justice at the grassroots level.

The Action Plan aligns with the Judiciary’s efforts to promote AJS through autonomous, third-party, and court-annexed mechanisms, creating multiple pathways for resolving disputes while upholding human rights, dignity, and social cohesion.

Haki Yetu joins fellow members of the Civic Freedoms Forum (CFF) in condemning the arrest of former Chief Justice David Maraga and other peaceful protesters who were exercising their constitutional right to assemble and express concerns over the protection of Nairobi National Park.

We reaffirm that peaceful assembly, public participation, and environmental justice are fundamental constitutional rights. Citizens should not face intimidation or arrest for raising legitimate concerns on matters of public interest.

As part of the pre–World Environment Day celebrations, Haki Yetu planted 300 mangrove seedlings at Kibarani, marking the adoption of our third mangrove restoration site.

In Bangladesh, we joined partners and community members in a clean-up exercise targeting an illegal dumping site, planted 50 trees, and installed a “No Dumping” signpost. GIS mapping showed that approximately 0.1 hectares of land had been affected by waste accumulation, highlighting the need for sustainable waste management solutions.

Haki Yetu convened a Community Scorecard Interface Meeting in Malindi, bringing together healthcare providers, local administrators, CSOs, and community members to review service delivery at Malindi Sub-County Hospital and identify priority gaps.

A 15-member committee was subsequently formed to champion accountability, follow up on key concerns, and support improvements in healthcare services.

This week, the committee held an Action Planning Meeting and developed a draft action plan outlining priority actions, responsibilities, and follow-up mechanisms to improve healthcare service delivery in Malindi.

Haki Yetu engaged parents, community members, and local leaders in Wamasa on child protection and the prevention of child abuse.

The forum identified five child protection cases: 2 cases of early marriage, 2 cases of defilement, and 1 case of abortion.

Community members also highlighted a major barrier to justice travelling approximately 57 kilometres and spending up to KES 3,000 to access essential support services.

Participants committed to advocating for stronger local protection mechanisms and improved access to justice for children.
