✨ Ubuntu and Education with Björn Wallen

What does it mean to educate for humanity, in a world facing deep uncertainty and transformation?

In this session, Björn Wallen - social anthropologist and long-time leader in Adult Learning Education - invites us to explore education as a space for building democracy, resilience and global citizenship.

With over 40 years of experience and a deep connection to Ubuntu since the 1980s, Björn brings a rich perspective shaped by his work across civil society, Nordic and global education networks, and his focus today on Planetary Education in times of polycrisis.

💛 From learning democracy through civic engagement to fostering peace and trust, this session will offer both reflection and practical pedagogical approaches inspired by the Ubuntu spirit.

Congratulations are in order for the Ubuntu Leaders Academy club at Taita Taveta University, which has successfully completed the training of a new group of 40 Ubuntu Leaders. This commendable initiative was expertly facilitated by a dedicated team of Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) from the University ULA club, ensuring that participants received a high-quality training experience. The program's impact was further enhanced by the inclusion of participants from the Ngerenyi Campus (The School of Agriculture, Earth and Environmental Sciences (SAEES), thereby broadening its reach within the region. The coordination of this significant training endeavor was spearheaded by Bravin Mulunda, the Club President, in collaboration with Dr. Mwakio Mwagandi, the Club Patron, whose leadership and guidance were pivotal to the program's overall success. We also wish to express our sincere gratitude to IPAV for their invaluable support, which has been instrumental in making this training initiative a reality.

On Friday, 20th March 2026, Ubuntu Leaders Academy Club members at Taita Taveta University in Kenya successfully carried out a charity activity focused on cleaning the university compound. The main objective of this initiative was to promote environmental cleanliness and demonstrate our commitment to community service.

The activity involved members coming together to clean various sections of the compound, ensuring a tidy and healthy environment for all. The exercise was carried out with great teamwork, dedication, and enthusiasm, making it a successful and impactful event.
After the cleaning activity, members gathered for a feast where everyone shared a meal and enjoyed the moment together. This provided a great opportunity for bonding, reflection, and celebrating the success of the day’s work.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all members who participated and contributed towards the success of this event. Special thanks also go to club parton Dr Mwakio Mwagandi and those who supported us in different ways, as well as the school administration for their cooperation and support.

Thank you all for your commitment and unity. Let us continue keeping the flame of Ubuntu burning.

Yesterday, the Ubuntu Club at TAITA TAVETA UNIVERSITY - VOI had the honor of hosting a delegation of students and staff from Shenandoah University in the United States. The primary aim of their visit was to gain a deeper understanding of the Ubuntu Club and its various initiatives. The event featured a presentation by Harry Mwailengo, the ULA Coordinator for East Africa, who elaborated on the Ubuntu program's objectives and impact. Additionally, Glady Mnjama, the Director of Partnerships and Investments for JKP, outlined the overarching goals of the partnership and discussed future plans for collaboration. The Shenandoah University team also contributed their thoughts and reflections on the event, while representatives from Taita Taveta University, including Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Christine Anyango and Dr. Mwakio Mwagandi, the ULA Patron, shared insights into their own activities and aspirations.

The day was filled with a variety of engaging activities designed to promote interaction and foster camaraderie among participants. Among these activities were a lively game of human bingo and a creative threads game, both of which encouraged teamwork and communication. These interactive sessions not only provided entertainment but also served as a platform for participants to connect on a personal level, enhancing the overall experience of the visit. As the day unfolded, the group embarked on an exhilarating safari at Tsavo East, where they were treated to breathtaking views of the region's diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. This excursion offered a unique opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of Kenya, further enriching the cultural exchange between the two universities.

The evening culminated in a delightful dinner at Afrika Lodges Hotel, which provided an ideal atmosphere for continued learning and the sharing of experiences. This gathering allowed participants to reflect on the day's events, discuss insights gained, and explore potential avenues for future collaboration. Overall, the day was a remarkable blend of knowledge exchange and cultural connection, leaving all attendees inspired and enthusiastic about the possibilities that lie ahead. The interactions and experiences shared during this visit not only strengthened the ties between Taita Taveta University and Shenandoah University but also laid the groundwork for future partnerships that promise to be mutually beneficial.

In Lamu County, Kenya, water scarcity is a significant challenge due to its classification as an Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL) area. The region heavily relies on seasonal rainfall, shallow wells, and traditional storage methods like djabias. Unfortunately, with insufficient rainfall, recurrent droughts, and inadequate infrastructure, the situation has become increasingly dire.

However, we are thrilled to share some positive news! Our dedicated members of the Ubuntu Leaders Academy (Lamu Mentoring Project), with generous support from the Dona Ajuda Foundation, have successfully implemented an innovative solution to this pressing issue. A new solar-powered water borehole has been established in Widho village, located in Lamu West Sub-County, providing much-needed access to clean water for over 2,000 households in a marginalized Somali community.

This project not only addresses the immediate water needs of the residents but also empowers the community by harnessing renewable energy to ensure a sustainable water supply. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Dona Ajuda Foundation for their invaluable support and partnership in making this project a reality. Together, we are taking significant steps towards alleviating the water crisis in Lamu County and improving the quality of life for its residents.

This is an Ubuntu - people powered development by our Ubuntu Leaders in Lamu who have been trained in entrepreneurship and now they have the capacity to manage community projects that aim at building bridges for the common good of Lamu residents
Once again thank you Dona Ajuda Foundation, it was a privilege to sponsor such qualified cohort of young people.
Let us continue to work hand in hand to create lasting change in communities facing similar challenges. Your support and engagement are crucial in driving these initiatives forward. Thank you for being part of this important journey toward a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
