Muungano wa Wanavijiji- SDI-K is a social movement of 'slum' residents and urban poor people in Kenya

This is the page for the Muungano wa Wanavijiji Kenyan alliance of slum dwellers and urban poor people, which was formed in 1996. With a central office in Nairobi, the Alliance combines three organisations: Muungano wa Wanavijiji, the Kenyan federation of slum dwellers; Akiba Mashinani Trust, the Kenyan urban poor fund; and SDI Kenya, technical support to the movement. Our vision is of ‘inclusive cities’, where low-income communities have adequate housing and services, and can live in dignity. We seek improvement and integration of slums into the city fabric. Slums and their residents are not an anomaly or problem, they are an inalienable part of the city and a major resource in its functioning. As well as advocating for inclusive cities, the Alliance (Muungano wa Wanavijiji, Akiba Mashinani Trust, and SDI Kenya) engages in negotiating, designing, and delivering real improvements to people's lives, as well as changes in practice and policy. By volunteering to improve their settlements, Muungano challenge the notion of slum residents as passive beneficiaries of city plans and development projects.

What is changing, and how do we know?

SDI Kenya and Muungano wa Wanavijiji are bringing together community members from Nakuru, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nairobi for an Outcome Harvesting Workshop.

Over the years, we have learned an important lesson: if we don't capture outcomes as they emerge, they can easily be forgotten. The small shifts, changes in relationships, new opportunities, stronger voices, and improvements in communities can be easy to overlook if they are not documented in the moment.

That is why communities are at the centre of this process.

The creation of safe and recreational community spaces is an important pathway towards river restoration, environmental conservation, and improved community wellbeing. A healthier environment can also contribute to better mental health within communities.

In line with this, Muungano wa Wanavijiji organized a community awareness and engagement session at the restored community ground along the Gitathuru River. With support from Muungano wa Wanavijiji and WRI Kenya, this section of the river is part of the planned restoration efforts. The engagement brought community members together to raise awareness of household waste segregation, river restoration, environmental stewardship, and the importance of mental health awareness and training within communities.

Restoring rivers is not only about restoring ecosystems, it is also about creating safe, inclusive spaces where communities can play, connect, learn, and thrive.

Architecture is not only about delivering a finished house; it is about designing the tools, spaces, and systems that make dignified living possible.

On Day 4 of the Pan-African Biennale, I had the privilege of joining the conversation as a panelist, sharing perspectives shaped by my work as an Architect with SDI Kenya and Muungano wa Wanavijiji.

For me, architecture is about listening, co-creating, and working alongside communities to transform ideas into solutions that respond to real needs. It is about creating processes that empower people to shape the places they call home; not simply designing for communities, but designing with them.

Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a wider Pan-African conversation on architecture, cities, housing, and the power of community-led development.

Architecture is more than buildings. It is a tool for dignity, resilience, and transformation.

Last week, SDI-Kenya/Muungano wa Wanavijiji was privileged to host Mercy Ojoyi from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) at Bandani Informal Settlement, Kisumu.

Her visit provided an important opportunity to share experiences and learn from community-led climate adaptation initiatives. Among the innovations showcased was the community’s work on climate-resilient housing, including the establishment of a floating foundation to address flooding and the high water table affecting the settlement.

The establishment of a 1.8-kilometre water network was meant to improve and enhance access to safe and clean water for residents of Bandani Informal Settlement.

These initiatives demonstrate the power of communities to develop practical, locally driven solutions to the challenges posed by climate change while improving living conditions and resilience of communities in the informal settlements.

Slum upgrading is climate action. 🏘️🌍

As the world prepares for , the links between housing, climate change and inequality cannot be overlooked.

We know that climate action must respond to the realities of communities living in informal settlements and that investing in safer, more resilient and adequate housing is an important part of that response.

On 28 September, SDI President Joe Muturi will join an international panel discussing Housing Justice at COP30: Civil Society Voices in the Climate Space, a new publication bringing together perspectives from civil society actors working at the intersection of housing and climate justice.

Joe will share insights from SDI on why slum upgrading is climate action, alongside contributors from across India, Brazil, Lebanon and Spain.

Join the conversation on how community-led and rights-based approaches to housing can help shape more just climate action ahead of COP31.
