Muungano wa Wanavijiji Muungano wa Wanavijiji- SDI-K is a social movement of 'slum' residents and urban poor people in Kenya

This is the page for the Muungano wa Wanavijiji Kenyan alliance of slum dwellers and urban poor people, which was formed in 1996. With a central office in Nairobi, the Alliance combines three organisations: Muungano wa Wanavijiji, the Kenyan federation of slum dwellers; Akiba Mashinani Trust, the Kenyan urban poor fund; and SDI Kenya, technical support to the movement. Our vision is of ‘inclusive

cities’, where low-income communities have adequate housing and services, and can live in dignity. We seek improvement and integration of slums into the city fabric. Slums and their residents are not an anomaly or problem, they are an inalienable part of the city and a major resource in its functioning. As well as advocating for inclusive cities, the Alliance (Muungano wa Wanavijiji, Akiba Mashinani Trust, and SDI Kenya) engages in negotiating, designing, and delivering real improvements to people's lives, as well as changes in practice and policy. By volunteering to improve their settlements, Muungano challenge the notion of slum residents as passive beneficiaries of city plans and development projects.

Community-led processes continue to demonstrate the power of community ownership and co-creation. When communities are actively involved in shaping and implementing solutions, they become more than beneficiaries; they become co-owners of the process and its outcomes.

We are glad to share that construction has now reached the roofing stage, and it is exciting to see the project taking shape. This progress reflects what is possible when communities, partners, and local stakeholders work together towards a shared vision.

This International Youth Day, Muungano wa Wanavijiji joined the Nairobi City County Department of Youth Affairs, the State Department for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, and other partners to create space for young people to share their experiences, ideas, and aspirations. For Muungano, this is also about making visible the pathways young people are building towards dignified livelihoods. Through the Dr. Sulley Gariba SDI Impact Innovation Initiative, young people are gaining practical digital skills, such as media, community-led data, and drone technology, opening new possibilities to turn their knowledge and skills into livelihoods in the emerging digital economy.

We held a meeting with the Mental Health Unit within the Mombasa County Department of Health Services to discuss opportunities for advancing our mental health programme across the coastal region. The meeting provided an opportunity to share key insights emerging from the Urban SHADE project, particularly on the mental health challenges and community-level needs identified in vulnerable coastal communities.

Discussions focused on areas of alignment between the county’s mental health priorities and our psychological resilience programme, including strengthening community-based mental health support, improving awareness and referral pathways, and building community members' capacity to provide appropriate psychosocial support.

We also explored opportunities to leverage existing county structures and expertise to support the identification, training, and mentorship of mental health champions who can serve as a link between communities and formal mental health services.

The engagement provided a strong foundation for collaboration with the County Department of Health Services that will inform the next steps in adapting and scaling mental health interventions within the coastal region.

The community continued renovating the pathway leading to the Resilience Hub as part of ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and create a safer environment for residents. Before the pathway renovation began, community members first carried out cleaning and clearing activities to remove waste, drain stagnant water, and other obstacles along the pathway. This initial step provided a clean and safe working space for the renovation activities.

The continued involvement of community members shows strong ownership, commitment, and collective responsibility towards improving the pathway and ensuring better access to the Resilience Hub for the entire community.

Tudor Muoroto Community youths received training on heat and flood data collection under the Urban Shade Project. The training equipped them with skills to identify and document community experiences with heat and flooding, as it remains a key challenge affecting the Urban Shade and Planning Project.
The session also focused on how these climate-related challenges affect the health and well-being of community members, including exposure to unsafe conditions and health risks that may limit accessibility, disrupt activities, and damage project infrastructure. Flood-resilient planning, improved drainage, and proper maintenance are recommended to enhance project sustainability.
Supporting evidence-based planning, prioritizing urban shade interventions, and strengthening community resilience to climate-related risks.

Creating inclusive cities means planning with communities, not for them. SDI Kenya and Muungano wa Wanavijiji were honoured to host the SDI Global President during a field visit to Kiamaiko, where the community continues to demonstrate the power of community-led planning and implementation.

Through the co-generation of its adaptation plan and implementation of drainage and resilience hub interventions, Kiamaiko is showing how improved infrastructure can reduce flooding while also creating play spaces, strengthening livelihoods, improving accessibility and transforming public spaces.

When communities lead, neighbourhoods become more resilient, inclusive and empowered.

Today, all roads led to Nairobi Cinema! 🎬✨

Muungano youth joined other young people from across Nairobi to commemorate International Youth Day under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
We are keen to bring perspectives from informal settlements into conversations on youth livelihoods, peace, mental health and technology issues that are particularly central to the lives and aspirations of young people living in informal settlements.
We look forward to sharing experiences, learning from other young people and ensuring that the voices of young people from informal settlements are part of these conversations.

To commemorate , join us on 25th August 2026 to explore how leaders from Muungano wa Wanavijiji (Muungano) – the largest national movement of slum dwellers and the urban poor in – are employing knowledge brokering to bridge the gap between evidence and locally led adaptation (LLA).

Sharing practical examples, we will deep dive into the knowledge brokering approaches and strategies that Muungano wa Wanavijiji’s young leaders have used to advance LLA within their local contexts. Through stories and examples from community-led adaptation planning, mental health and wellbeing initiatives, and locally driven nature-based solutions, participants will gain insights into how knowledge can be mobilized to support inclusive, equitable and locally owned climate action.

The insights presented are the culmination of a collaborative learning journey between CDKN, SDI-Kenya and Muungano wa Wanavijiji, and will result in a full-scale report that will be published later this year.

This webinar is part of CDKN's series on enabling and scaling LLA, which aims to spark critical conversations, share practical lessons, and address key questions on how to advance and scale the LLA agenda across diverse contexts.
