Students from financially struggling families need to be very careful when applying for courses. Many students rush to apply for private universities without understanding the financial burden that comes with it.

One thing you must know is that students in private universities are not eligible for government scholarships. The only support you may receive is HELB tuition loan, and at times the disbursement delays because priority is often given to students in public universities.

This becomes very challenging especially for students whose parents or guardians are not financially stable. School fees in many private universities are expensive and without scholarships, some students end up deferring studies, dropping out or struggling with huge fee balances.

As you apply for courses, always consider the kind of family background you come from. If your family is not financially strong, public universities should be your first priority because they offer government scholarships and more financial support opportunities.

Do not apply courses blindly because of excitement or pressure from friends. Make wise decisions today to avoid financial stress tomorrow. Education is important, but choosing a university you can comfortably afford is equally important. Some private universities even block you from accessing the university when you delay paying your school fees. Choose wisely.

Seven (7) Things You Must Do Before Sending Your Job Application. For Serious Job Seekers Only.

Most job seekers send the same application to every company. Generic CV and a copy-pasted cover letter. Then they sit back and wonder why nobody is calling.

I know the market is partly to blame. But more often than not, the process is the problem. I want to give you a checklist of 7 things you need to tick before you hit send.

Number 7 will change your outlook. Let's go.

(1) Tailor your CV to that specific job.

Not your master CV. A version that speaks directly to what that employer is asking for. Use the same language in the job description. Recruiters spend seconds scanning your CV. Make every second count.

(2) Write a cover letter that actually says something.

I know people say that recruiters don't read cover letters. But, if they ask for one, do not open with "I am writing to apply for the position of..."

Nobody wants to read that. Open with a hook. Show you understand the company's problem. Explain how you solve it. Three short paragraphs and you are done.

(3) Research the company properly.

Know their recent news. Understand their values. Be aware of the challenges they are facing. Weave this into your application and you immediately signal that you want this job specifically, not just any job.

(4) Check your CV for keywords from the job ad.

Most companies run applications through an ATS before a human ever sees them. If your CV does not contain the right words, it is filtered out automatically. Use the job advert as your guide and make sure the language matches.

(5) Clean up your formatting.

No graphics, multiple fonts, or multiple pages life story. Simple, clean and under two pages. A CV that is easy to read always beats one that is trying too hard to impress.

(6) Prepare a follow up message.

After applying, send a short professional message. Not desperate. Not lengthy. Just a brief note expressing your interest. Most candidates skip this entirel

Many students and parents get confused about which path is better. Here’s the truth:
🟢 Diploma Nurses (KMTC & Colleges):
Focus on practical, hands-on training
Fast entry into the workforce (~3 years)
Highly employable in general nursing roles, county and rural hospitals
🔵 Degree Nurses (Universities):
Combines clinical skills with leadership, research, and theory
Takes longer to complete (~4 years)
Preferred for management, specialized care, teaching, and research roles
Slightly higher starting salary and faster promotion opportunities
💡 Key Insight:
Entry-level jobs → diploma nurses often dominate due to practical readiness
Specialized and leadership roles → degree nurses are preferred

Want fast employment? Diploma nursing is ideal
Want career growth, specialization, and leadership? Go for a degree

Those who have missed placement during the main KUCCPS application of courses should not lose hope. Keep your head high because all is not lost. You still have another opportunity, and that is why KUCCPS has opened the revision period to allow you to apply for other available courses.

It is important for you to understand why you missed placement: These are some of the reasons you missed placement.

• Your cluster points may not have met the cut-off points of the universities or courses you applied for.
• Competition was very stiff since many students performed well in KCSE 2025.
• It is not necessarily that you did not qualify for the courses you wanted, but the competition for those popular courses was extremely high.
• Some students ignored the guidance and advice they were given. Many failed to consider their cluster points, university cut-off points, and the level of competition despite being aware of what KUCCPS considers during placement.
• Some students became overambitious and unrealistic by insisting on courses they did not qualify for based on their performance.
• Others were too selective with universities and only wanted to join certain institutions while rejecting others. Many of you only wanted to join these big universities without considering that competition to join there is always high. You never wanted to hear anything to do with these other universities located upcountry.

Universities such as UON, KU, and JKUAT are highly competitive because many students prefer them. That is why most of their courses have very high cut-off points. I kept advising many of you to also consider smaller universities that are less competitive, but some of you ignored that advice. I always told you to prioritize the course more than the university, but many still failed to do so.

At this stage, it is important to accept reality, be realistic, and avoid being overambitious. Consider the courses currently available during revision. One disadvantage of being asked
