THE GOVERNMENT OWNS YOUR LAND, NOT YOU.
Yes, including that land you bought with your sweat.
Before you get angry, read this carefully 👇
Under Nigerian law, you don’t truly “own” land the way you think.
The Governor controls ALL land in the state.
What you have is just a Right of Occupancy.
Meaning?
You’re not the absolute owner.
You’re more like a legal tenant of the government.
Yes. Let that sink in.
That’s why:
Your land can be revoked for “public purpose”.
Your land documents can be declared invalid
Government can take over your land, with compensation (sometimes small!)
NOW HERE’S WHERE IT GETS MORE CONTROVERSIAL:
Not even the Governor controls everything.
Some lands belong directly to the Government
ANY LAND WITH MINERALS Resources belongs to the federal Government, not yours.
Crude oil, gas, gold, tin, coal, anything valuable under your land? It’s theirs, not yours.
You may own the surface but the government owns what’s beneath.
So next time someone says,
“I’m a land owner”
Just smile and ask:
“Owner, or occupant?”
