One of the most beautiful things to witness is the way the children love and care for one another as brothers and sisters.

You’ll see a 5-year-old patiently feeding a 2-year-old. A child quietly sewing another child’s torn trousers. Older children fetching water so the little ones can have a bath and others can start preparing dinner over the fire. Boys climbing mango trees and returning with their treasure, making sure every child gets a share. Teenagers stepping into leadership roles, organizing chore charts and helping guide the younger ones.

If there is only one pair of soccer boots, one child will wear the left boot and another the right. If there is only one biscuit, they will crush it into tiny pieces so everyone can have a taste. The older children tutor the younger ones, carry them on their backs for miles, comfort them when they cry, and gently hold them accountable to help others wherever they can too.

These children show up for one another in ways that many of the adults in their lives were never able to. Through shared hardships, they have built something truly special within the home of Kiota Kids — a family. A place where they love, protect, and encourage one another, and don’t have to feel like they are facing life’s challenges alone.

What is perhaps most remarkable is that despite the hardship and harshness that filled their pasts, they have held onto an extraordinary capacity for empathy and compassion. They know what it means to go without, and because of that, they are often the first to share what little they have.

The kindness, generosity, and love they show one another every day has been one of the greatest privileges of this journey to witness.
