A JOYFUL MOMENT FOR WILDLIFE AS EWASO NYIRO BEGINS TO FLOW AGAIN

What an amazing day in nature! 🙌😊 Today, Ngaremara Environmental Conservation CBO, together with the Isiolo County Department of Tourism, represented by Assistant Director Mr. Nagele Hassan, and Grevy's Zebra Trust , participated in the joint Ewaso Nyiro River Drying-Up Situation Analysis.

The team visited Ewaso Nyiro through Buffalo Springs National Reserve and, around Soroi Larsen’s, observed sections of the river that were completely dry, with wildlife roaming around in search of water.

We proceeded upstream towards Soroi Samburu to establish how far the dry sections extended. To our happiness and relief, we eventually encountered water flowing downstream. 💧🙌 The sight was beautiful—not only for the team, but for the wildlife as well. 🐘🦓🦒 Some wildlife stood in the riverbed as though witnessing the return of a precious gift from nature.

We continued monitoring the river downstream towards Shaba National Reserve, where we observed stronger water flow in some sections, supported by natural springs within the reserve.💧

Ngaremara Environmental Conservation CBO sincerely appreciates the Isiolo County Government for its support towards conservation. After concerns were raised about the drying up of Ewaso Nyiro, the County Government responded immediately by engaging conservation stakeholders to assess the situation.

We also appreciate Samburu National Reserve for its cooperation and coordination with the team conducting the situation analysis.🤝

We are proud and happy to have undertaken this important activity collectively as conservation stakeholders from Isiolo and Samburu counties. Working together allows us to better understand the challenges facing Ewaso Nyiro and identify ways to support wildlife, communities and the wider ecosystem.

We thank God for the return of water to some sections of Ewaso Nyiro. 🙏💧 The happiness witnessed among wildlife gives us hope.

📸 The two photos tell a worrying story:

📅 1st September 2026: Ewaso Nyiro River still had water, with elephants drinking from the river.

📅 11th September 2026: Just 10 days later, the same section had dried up, leaving elephants stranded and searching for water.

❓ What could be causing this rapid change? Could it be prolonged drought and climate change, upstream water abstraction, irrigation and farming activities, diversion of water, or other factors?

As Ngaremara Conservation CBO, we welcome views and information from the public, especially communities living along the Ewaso Nyiro River. However, we believe the actual cause should be established through proper assessment and evidence.

Ewaso Nyiro is a lifeline for wildlife and communities. Let us speak up, share information and support conservation efforts to protect this vital river.

As Ngaremara Conservation CBO, we are sharing these two photos to highlight the worrying changes along the Ewaso Nyiro River.

📸 1st September 2026: The river still had water, with elephants drinking and benefiting from this vital source.

📸 11th September 2026: Just 10 days later, the same section had dried up, leaving elephants stranded and searching for water.

This is a serious reminder of how vulnerable our wildlife and ecosystem are during dry periods. Ewaso Nyiro is a lifeline for wildlife and communities, and we call for continued collaboration among conservation partners, government agencies and communities to support urgent and sustainable solutions.

Today, Ngaremara Environmental Conservation CBO was privileged to be invited by Save the Elephants as a partner to attend the official launch of the newly constructed Chumviyere Primary School New Kitchen, a facility constructed by Save the Elephants to support the school and the local community.

The launch brought together conservation partners, including Ewaso Lions, Nakuprat Gotu Wildlife Community Conservancy, Grevy’s Zebra Trust, community representatives, and the community at large.

We sincerely commend and appreciate Save the Elephants for this great initiative and for investing in a facility that will directly benefit the learners and the wider community. Such projects demonstrate the important role conservation organisations can play in supporting community development and strengthening positive relationships between conservation and local communities.

As Ngaremara Environmental Conservation CBO, we appreciate and support the continued efforts of the conservation fraternity to work closely with communities through education, livelihood support, conservation awareness, and development initiatives.

We believe that conservation and community development must go hand in hand. When conservation partners and communities work together, we can create lasting benefits for both people and wildlife.

Today, Ngaremara Environmental Conservation CBO joined Isiolo County CECM Trade, Tourism and Wildlife Dr. Lawrence Mwongela, Chief Officer Tourism Batula Abdullahi, Tourism Assistant Directors, Grevy’s Zebra Trust and other conservation stakeholders for an important discussion on the worsening Ewaso Nyiro River water crisis, following the drying up of some sections of the river.

The situation is increasingly concerning as the Ewaso Nyiro River remains a critical lifeline for wildlife, livestock, communities and the wider ecosystem. The drying river is forcing wildlife to move longer distances in search of water, increasing their vulnerability and putting additional pressure on already stressed rangelands and other available water sources.

During the meeting, we discussed the importance of conducting a proper situation analysis and fact-finding exercise to establish the extent of the crisis, identify the most affected areas and understand the immediate and long-term needs of wildlife and communities.

We also emphasised the need for collective action, partnership and resource mobilisation involving government agencies, conservation organisations, community conservancies and local communities. Sustainable water solutions must be developed based on reliable information and the realities on the ground.

We appreciate the leadership and commitment demonstrated by the Isiolo County Government, Grevy’s Zebra Trust and all conservation stakeholders who are coming together to address this challenge.

As Ngaremara Environmental Conservation CBO, we remain committed to working with all stakeholders to promote community-led conservation, protect wildlife and water resources, restore our rangelands and support sustainable solutions for both people and nature.

EWASO NYIRO RIVER WATER CRISIS

NGAREMARA ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION CBO is deeply concerned about the worsening water situation along the Ewaso Nyiro River, particularly between Soroi Samburu and Soroi Larsen’s.
The river has dried up in sections, leaving wildlife stranded and moving up and down in desperate search of water. 🐘🦓🦒💧
We urgently call upon conservation partners, wildlife organizations, government agencies and communities to come together and support immediate water interventions to prevent wildlife suffering and possible deaths.
Water is life for both people and wildlife. Let us act before it is too late.

💧COMMUNITY-LED WATER PANS INITIATIVE FOR WILDLIFE
The Ewaso Nyiro River is currently experiencing severe drying in some sections, particularly along the areas bordering Samburu National Reserve and Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Wildlife is moving up and down the dry river sections in search of water, making this a very difficult period for wildlife within the ecosystem. 🐘🦒🦓🐃
In response, Ngaremara Environmental Conservation CBO is supporting a community-led initiative to dig water pans in strategic dry sections of the Ewaso Nyiro River to provide supplementary water access for wildlife during this challenging dry season.
💧CALL FOR CONSERVATION SUPPORT
We are calling upon conservation partners, youth groups, community members, tourism stakeholders, well-wishers and government agencies to support this important initiative through funding, equipment, technical expertise, manpower and other resources.
Organizations and conservation partners working within the Ewaso ecosystem are encouraged to join hands with local communities to help provide a lifeline for wildlife.
🤝 Together, we can turn community action into meaningful conservation impact.
💧The river may be dry, but our commitment to wildlife must remain strong.
Let us work together to protect wildlife, restore water access and strengthen community-led conservation.

🌿 NGAREMARA CONSERVATION CBO | NAKUPRAT GOTU WILDLIFE COMMUNITY CONSERVANCY AGM

Today, Ngaremara Conservation CBO had the opportunity to attend the Nakuprat Gotu Wildlife Community Conservancy Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Manyatta Zebra Location as a conservation partner.

The AGM marked the conclusion of a series of zonal pre-AGM meetings conducted across the conservancy last week. These meetings provided an opportunity for communities in different zones to discuss their priorities, challenges, and expectations before coming together for the main AGM.

During today's meeting, representatives from all zones came together to deliberate on issues affecting the conservancy and the wider community. Among the key priorities raised by the community were land registration and support for conservancy rangers.

Land registration was identified as an important step towards strengthening community land rights, securing land ownership, improving land governance, and supporting long-term conservation planning. The community also recognized the important role played by conservancy rangers in protecting wildlife, preventing environmental degradation, responding to conservation challenges, and promoting peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.

The community was further sensitized on the importance of environmental protection and conservation, including the need to protect natural habitats, safeguard wildlife, manage natural resources responsibly, and work together to maintain a healthy environment for both present and future generations.

The meeting brought together various stakeholders, including the Ngaremara MCA representative, Nakuprat Gotu Wildlife Community Conservancy management, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Ngaremara Conservation CBO, community representatives, and other conservation stakeholders.

As a conservation partner, Ngaremara Conservation CBO remains committed to supporting community-led conservation initiatives, strengthening environmental awareness, promoting sustainable natural resource management, and working alongside communities and conservation partners to protect biodiversity.

We believe that meaningful conservation is strongest when communities are at the centre of decision-making and benefit from protecting the natural resources they depend on.

🤝🌿 Together, we can protect our land, support our rangers, conserve our environment, and build a sustainable future for our communities and wildlife.
