Our young girls need access to accurate information on menstrual health and hygiene from an early age. Yet, menstruation remains surrounded by stigma, shame, myths, and misconceptions that often leave girls confused and unsupported.
During our awareness session at Gangara Comprehensive School, we engaged adolescent girls in open conversations on menstrual health and hygiene management, promoting healthy menstrual practices, boosting their confidence and self-esteem, and creating a safe space where they could freely discuss menstrual and sexual reproductive health concerns.
What stood out most was the many questions the girls had about their bodies, menstruation, and reproductive health. Many admitted that they often shy away from seeking answers from teachers, parents, and guardians due to fear, embarrassment and cultural barriers. However, when provided with a safe and supportive environment, the girls openly shared their concerns, asked questions, and actively participated in the discussions.
This reminds us that every girl deserves access to information, support, and a judgment-free space where she can learn, grow, and manage her menstrual health with confidence and dignity.
