📢From 5-9 March in Laikipia North, the Women Land Champions Forum brought together Maasai women leaders from Laikipia and Narok Counties for a 5-day intensive retreat dedicated to land, health, and rights.

♀️Implemented by IPSIA and We World under the AICS-funded program “Women Empowerment, Environment and Health Support in Kenya”, the forum broke geographical silos and built a shared regional vision.

🌍Across five days of learning, dialogue, and collective strategy, women moved from shared challenges to shared solutions, addressing land rights, leadership and governance, protection from gender based violence, access to sexual reproductive health right, and women-led livelihood innovations such as beekeeping and kitchen gardens.

🤝The forum concluded with more than conversations. A unified manifesto was co-created. A Women Lead network with a 12-month action plan was launched. And over 100 Maasai women left stronger, connected, and ready to lead change locally, regionally, and globally.

Because when Maasai women lead, communities and lands thrive. ✊🏾

A heartfelt thank you to all our partners and supporters who made this event possible:

🌍In recent weeks, IPSIA and its partners convened two important coordination tables bringing together local institutions, community representatives and implementing partners working in Laikipia.

🌱The meetings focused on two initiatives currently underway in the county: the newly launched “Value chains’ development and water access for food security in Kenya” project in , and the "Women Empowerment, Environment and Health Support in Kenya", now in its 18th month of implementation in . While at different stages, the meetings were an opportunity to strengthen dialogue, share progress and align strategies with local actors and institutions.

💪🏾Beyond individual projects, these moments reflect IPSIA’s programmatic approach in Laikipia: working alongside communities, civil society organisations and local authorities to support inclusive governance, sustainable management of natural resources and resilient livelihoods in the county’s arid and semi-arid areas.

♀️Particular attention is given to the active participation of women and vulnerable groups, promoting opportunities for leadership, economic inclusion and community-driven development.

🤝With the support of Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Nairobi and together with County Government of Laikipia Department of Water, Environment & Natural Resources - Laikipia County Laikipia Permaculture Centre, IMPACT_KENYA, Saint Martin CSA, Fondazione Fontana Onlus and Acquifera APS, IPSIA continues to work alongside communities to strengthen capacities, dialogue with institutions and long-term resilience in Laikipia.

🌱 Last Thursday in Embu County, the Right Coffee Project celebrated an important milestone with the official handover of two newly built coffee processing factories to Kagaari North FCS and Kithungururu FCS.

🤝 The ceremonies marked the transition from construction to full community ownership, empowering local cooperatives with improved infrastructure to enhance coffee quality, value addition, and sustainability along the coffee value chain.

🏛 The events brought together cooperative members, project partners, consultants, and contractors, alongside representatives from the County Government of Embu and the National Drought Management Authority - highlighting the importance of coordinated action between local institutions and civil society.

🙏 A special thank you goes to the Chairpersons of Kagaari North FCS and Kithungururu FCS for their leadership and commitment, as well as to the cooperative boards and management whose dedication made this achievement possible.

🌍 We are proud to walk this journey alongside our partners and cooperatives, working toward a more sustainable, innovative, and inclusive coffee value chain in Kenya.

🌍RUN FOR HUMAN RIGHTS – powered by Italian Civil Society Organizations

🌱On Human Rights Day, 10th December 2025, Musul Communal Land in Laikipia North hosted the Run for Human Rights, bringing together grassroots organizations, women’s self-help groups, youth activist networks, Italian CSOs and AICS Nairobi to exchange best practices and ideas on addressing the complex links between gender-based violence, women’s rights and climate change.

🏃‍♀️The community run stood as a powerful symbol of unity and resilience, as girls and women reclaimed their ancestral land, affirming their rights and their essential role in protecting both their communities and the environment.

♀️COIKE Talks and the COIKE Panel Discussion – A Land for Justice brought together activists from across Kenya for a rich and engaging dialogue. The discussions highlighted how GBV, women’s rights and climate change are deeply interconnected, especially in ASAL areas, where environmental stress directly shapes everyday life.

✨Our deepest thanks to Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Nairobi Ambasciata d'Italia a Nairobi and Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Nairobi for their continued support; to COIKE - Coordination of Italian NGOs in Kenya for organizing and leading this inspiring initiative; and to Laikipia Permaculture Centre IMPACT_KENYA County Government of Laikipia, Musul Community Land, the women SHGs of Laikipia North, the Northern Kenya Half Marathon and the Northern Kenya Running Club for making this possible.
Your presence and engagement turn dialogue into action.

🌍IPSIA Kenya is pleased to announce the Acquifera field visit carried out from 27 November to 1 December.

💧Acquifera is a non-profit organisation of professional geologists that works globally to improve water access in areas facing scarcity or water quality challenges, while promoting the sustainable use of groundwater resources.

💦Over the course of two days visit, the Acquifera team visited 16 communities in Laikipia North to conduct a comprehensive socio-hydrogeological assessment aimed at deepening the understanding of water availability, management practices, and community needs within the region.

🤝The findings from this assessment were presented on 1st December at the Governor’s Hall, in the presence of the Department of Water, Environment & Natural Resources - Laikipia County, along with representatives from various local and national institutions. The session provided a collaborative space to review the collected data and discuss how it can guide more effective and sustainable water resource planning. Building on this, Acquifera’s hydrogeological analysis and groundwater mapping will be useful for planning cost-effective and impactful interventions across Laikipia North.

⛲The socio-hydrogeological assessment carried out in Laikipia North explored how water resources are managed, accessed, and experienced within the communities, combining technical analysis with local perspectives through a fully participatory approach. This methodology helps bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and community realities, ensuring that those most affected by water-related challenges become active contributors in shaping practical solutions and strengthening the vital connection between groundwater resources and local socio-economic development.

💪🏽IPSIA firmly believes that access to water is not just an outcome but a catalyst for sustainable community development, making this activity a pivotal contribution to empowering communities in Laikipia North under the WEEHS project, funded by Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Nairobi in partnership with the County Government of Laikipia, IMPACT_KENYA, and the Laikipia Permaculture Centre.
