Kenya’s seed sector through inclusive dialogue

We participated in a stakeholder forum on the proposed Seed Varieties Bill and Plant Genetic Resources Institute Bill, bringing together farmers, breeders, researchers and other stakeholders to discuss the future of Kenya’s seed sector.

The discussions focused on seed production, quality assurance, marketing and access, conservation of plant genetic resources, and the recognition and protection of farmers’ varieties and rights.

These conversations are essential in shaping legislation that is inclusive, practical and responsive to Kenya’s agricultural needs.

Imagine entering a mentorship class expecting to meet 50 students, and instead you find over 200 waiting, eager to listen and learn. That's exactly what happened at KKMau Comprehensive School.

We couldn't turn anyone away, so we went ahead with the lessons and ended up reaching 256 students (174 girls, 82 boys) from Grades 7, 8, and 9. Topics covered included positive masculinity, teenage pregnancy prevention, menstrual health management, and disease prevention, with a focus on STIs and HIV/AIDS.

One standout moment: the boys' excitement during the menstrual management session, facilitated by fellow youth and a male facilitator at that. For many girls, it was their first time getting this information before experiencing their period, leaving them feeling prepared for a new stage of life. As one student put it, the session helped her feel ready for what's ahead.

One of the boys shared: "The male facilitator amazed me, and that has changed my perception and attitude about what girls go through. I now understand."
The sheer number of attendees, their hunger to learn, and their determination not to be left out truly inspired our team.
Lesson learnt: Achievement begins with definite desire big dreams often require you to stop worrying about looking ridiculous.

To empower households with practical skills, the TAI Kenya team spent with the Capernaum Women Group

We covered kitchen gardening, water conservation, composting, bio-fertilizer production, and group development. The energy was incredible, and members immediately requested hands-on follow-up sessions.

One member shared: “I used to spend a lot of money buying organic fertilizers, but I’ve now learned how to make my own at home, helping me save money while growing healthier food.”

Women to Strengthen Their Livelihoods

TAI Kenya visited the Capernaum Women Group in Nkinyanga as we begin working with the group.

The women currently run a Merry-Go-Round and support members with school fees and emergency contributions of KSh 200 when a member needs help.

Our engagement focused on understanding their existing activities, identifying areas where we can support them, and agreeing on the way forward.

Training sessions with the group will begin next Tuesday as part of our work to strengthen women’s capacity and livelihoods.

Meet Mwalimu David, a farmer turning his vision into reality.

His farm has over 600 pawpaw seedlings, 130 passion fruit plants, several avocado trees, and food crops including cassava, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and yams,all grown using organic farming practices.

His next goal is to expand to 3,000 pawpaw trees and 100 Golden Hass avocado trees.
His story proves you can do it too.Lets go organic,lets live healthy.

Water scarcity is a major hurdle in local environmental projects, but resilience is key. Our team checked on the trees project at KK Mau School today, and despite dry conditions, the trees are holding their ground and growing.

Sustaining environmental initiatives requires commitment from local stakeholders and the community. Seeing these trees thrive proves that community-led conservation works.
