We have lost 90% of our wetlands over the last century.

Every drained wetland has negative effects on our climate. Their loss also reduces the natural diversity of our special wetland birds, fish, insects and plants. But we can do something about it.

Drained wetlands can be rewetted and restored, and when they are it’s a win for the climate, nature and communities.

Schools of Life: Indigenous-Led Biocentric Restoration 🎋

Indigenous communities are leading the way in ecosystem recovery with the Biocentric Restoration Initiative led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). By blending ancestral knowledge with innovative practices, they're restoring lands, protecting biodiversity and strengthening food systems.

At the heart of this movement are schools of life—spaces where elders pass down wisdom to future generations, ensuring the survival of traditional knowledge. In Ecuador, Kichwa communities are using native (wamag) to heal the land and nourish their people.

✨ Key impacts from the pilot project
- 55.59 hectares restored
- 156 species reintroduced
- 20,678 plants cultivated
- Creation of four schools of life
- Revival of bamboo as part of the traditional Kichwa diet
