Behind every bar of soap is a woman learning, growing, and building hope for a better future.

Through Cohort 9, women are transforming natural ingredients , mwarubaini, carrots, aloe vera, milk, and natural oils , into handmade soaps crafted with care and purpose ,For these women, this is more than soap making. It is about gaining practical skills, creating opportunities to earn an income, support their families, and build confidence in their abilities. Each bar represents resilience, determination, and the power of women creating change within their communities.

Sometimes, empowerment begins with something as simple as a bar of soap.

Joy, confidence, and proud smiles filled the room as participants under the Sustainable Pathways Programme celebrated their final scores and proudly showcased their finished work.

The practical speed test focused on neatness, accuracy, concentration, attention to detail, time management, and the ability to produce quality work under pressure ,helping participants strengthen practical skills while building confidence in their abilities.

Through the continued partnership between BECI and , we continue creating opportunities where women and young people can learn, grow, and take meaningful steps toward sustainable livelihoods and economic independence.

Day 2 of detergent-making with Cohort 9 detergent participants.

For many women in Mathare and Ruaraka, life means long walks to Eastleigh, Pangani, Parklands and Westlands, doing door-to-door laundry just to earn enough for the day. Long hours, heavy work, and no guarantee of income.

But something is shifting.

Today they are learning to make shampoo, conditioner and disinfectants, products they already use in their daily work and homes.

This is more than a skill. It’s a way to reduce daily costs, create extra income, and slowly move from survival to stability.

They continue their hustle, but now with something in their hands that can grow into a business. Something they own.

With support from our partnership with , we are strengthening women’s economic power, reducing poverty and helping prevent gender-based violence by increasing financial independence.

In March, we held our final class with BECI Cohort 2 , and what a meaningful way it was to close the journey, with a focus on leadership. We also came together to celebrate over cake, laughter, and shared memories.

A special highlight of the day was the cake, baked with the support of LIFT and our incredible guest, Marvel. Her story continues to inspire women to pursue economic independence using the skills they already have. She also encouraged participants to fully embrace the LIFT lessons and put them into practice as they grow their businesses.

It was truly an incredible experience walking alongside such passionate and committed participants. From the very first session to the last, the growth, resilience, and dedication shown were inspiring.

As the program came to an end, our participants left ready to put into practice the skills, knowledge, and confidence they had built along the way.

This was not the end — it marked the beginning of new journeys, new opportunities, and greater impact in the community.

We also extend our sincere thanks to our partner, Nafasi Opportunity Society, for their continued support, and to the LIFT Entrepreneurship Program at the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia (UBC).

Teamwork made this possible. Working with a stretch fabric to create a pencil skirt wasn't easy but we pushed through and now we proudly celebrate the result.

Instead of turning away from clients with different tastes in fabric, as a growing fashion designer, we embrace them. Each challenge builds their creativity thus strengthening their confidence to long term growth.

This is proof that with patience, teamwork and determination, we can turn any fabric into something beautiful

One lesson and style at a time. From practice, patience and persistence.
Through hairdressing, these women are creating power, changing their lives and standing on their own in creating opportunities for their future.
Each day in class adds something new to their skills, from simple lines and now practicing how to style braids. Every step tells a story of growth and rising independence.
