What if hard work pays?

Meet Isaac Muimi (52 years old), a father of six and a resilient farmer from Kyeni kya Karuri SHG in Karuri village of Waita sub-location, Mwingi central sub-county (Kitui County). Isaac is reaping a decent income by using the implemented sand dam and shallow well project to meet his family’s needs and welfare.

Initially, his passion for farming was often marred by the rampant drought and erratic rainfall in this ASAL (Arid and Semi-Arid Lands) area. Thanks to TWP (The Water Project) in partnership with ASDF (Africa Sand Dam Foundation), Mr. Muimi ekes out about KSh 40,000 per season from his farm through the implemented project that provides sufficient water regardless of the season. He plants kale, sugarcane, pawpaw, and tomatoes on his farm and intends to purchase a solar-powered irrigation system to boost farm output.

Today, the group is thriving growing kales, spinach, amaranthus, pumpkin, and nurturing a vibrant tree nursery
“Since the project was completed, we’ve seen real impact,” shares Christine Nthenya (38), the group’s secretary. “We’ve already made KSh 16,000 from vegetable sales and we’re planning to expand even more land!”
This is more than water. It’s resilience, teamwork, and growing hope.

For years, students at Itoloni Girls' Secondary School in Migwani, Mwingi West (Kitui County) faced a daily struggle that had nothing to do with exams or homework — water scarcity. Prolonged drought in the region meant the school relied on an unreliable community borehole that frequently broke down and could not meet the needs of both the school and the surrounding community. Water had to be rationed, and purchasing water from bowsers was costly, making day-to-day school operations extremely challenging.

Today, that story has changed.

Thanks to the support of The Water Project, in partnership with the Africa Sand Dam Foundation, the school now has a 104,000-litre masonry water tank providing a reliable supply of clean water for learners and staff.

With safe water readily available, students can now stay hydrated, maintain proper hygiene, and focus on what truly matters — their education and future.

Access to water is more than convenience; it is dignity, health, and opportunity for every learner.
