Advancing the Rights and Dignity of Older Persons in Kenya

Older persons play a vital role in preserving knowledge, culture, and resilience within our communities. Yet many continue to face barriers in accessing social protection, services, and meaningful participation in decision-making.

On 5th March 2026, Pastoralist Integrated Support Programme PISP joined the National Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Ageing convened by the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs under the theme:
“Strengthening Coordination and Implementation of Older Person Rights.”

The forum brought together government, civil society, and development partners including HelpAge International, Age International, Echami A Ito, HAKI Yetu Organization to strengthen collaboration and renew commitments toward protecting and promoting the rights of older persons.

At PISP, we remain committed to advocating for inclusive policies, stronger social protection systems, and community-led approaches that ensure older persons—especially those in pastoralist and marginalized communities—live with dignity, security, and respect.

Protecting the rights of older persons is a shared responsibility. Together, we can build a society where no one is left behind.

PISP was honored to host our valued donor representatives at the SAG Project (Sponsor a Grandparent) sites this past week. The visit offered a meaningful opportunity to showcase project progress, engage directly with beneficiaries, and reflect on the transformative impact of continued support within the community.

During the field site visits in Shurr of North Horr Sub County and Nairibi in Laisaimis Sub County, the HelpAge International and Age International teams toured the demonstration kitchen garden structures, met with members of the Older Persons Associations (OPA), and observed improved farming techniques being implemented by local farmers.

Through the SAG Project, farmers have received training in OPA formation, climate-smart agriculture, access to improved seeds, and guidance on sustainable agricultural practices. These interventions have significantly strengthened household food security while increasing the participation, inclusion, and engagement of older persons in community development initiatives.

Community members shared powerful testimonies on how the project has improved livelihoods, enhanced income levels, built resilience to climate-related challenges, and strengthened social interaction through OPA group meetings.

The donor delegation commended the community’s commitment and the visible results achieved so far. Constructive discussions were also held on scaling up successful practices and ensuring long-term sustainability.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our partners and donors for their continued support. Together, we are empowering communities, strengthening older persons’ inclusion, and promoting sustainable household food security through OPAs.

Dukana Ward has reached an important moment with the formal submission of Form CLA 1, moving closer to recognized and protected community land. This milestone reflects strong local leadership and the resilience of pastoralist communities in defending their land and future.

A Major Milestone for the Dukana Community!

We are delighted to mark an important breakthrough for Dukana Ward of Marsabit County ongoing journey toward securing community land ownership and strengthening collective stewardship.

With generous support from The Christensen Fund and Nia Tero Pastoralist Integrated Support Programme PISP in partnership with Kivulini Trust successfully supported the Dukana community in advancing their land rights.

The Interim Community Land Management Committee (CLMC), together with community representatives, officially submitted Form CLA 1 to the Registrar of Community Land at the Isiolo Land Registry (Ardhi House).

Submitting the Community Land Act (CLA) form to the Registrar is a key step in securing legal recognition of community land. It officially starts the registration process, protects land from grabbing and encroachment, and helps establish clear ownership and boundaries.

This achievement highlights the strength of grassroots leadership, effective policy implementation, and the determination of pastoralist communities to protect their rights, land, and heritage. We commend the leadership of the interim CLMC and sincerely thank all partners and stakeholders who made this milestone possible.
