On this day, we celebrate the strength, dreams and leadership of girls everywhere! HADADEGE CBO

HADADEGE CBO aims at continuous supply of menstrual hygiene materials – sanitary towels, panties, soap and tissue to all school going girls in Illeret Ward in Marsabit County .and Kerio Ward -Turkana County, target number 2,000 girls. Our goal is to promote girl education -enrolment, retention and transition rates and to end periods of stigma. In addition, we conduct mentorship and scholarship programs.

According to UNICEF 2007 report, a girl in primary school grades 4 to 8 loses approximately 18 weeks out of 108 school weeks, girl in high school loses 156 learning days which is equivalent to almost 24 weeks out of 144 weeks of school .Many poor girls continue to miss school during their me**es because of periods poverty. This leaves girls in a disadvantaged position to compete fairly with boys.

In Illeret, which is already marginalized in all standards, being at a border point there is limited development and thus almost zero access to sanitary materials. The nearest town is 600 kms away and the road is all weather with bandits’ attacks and insecurity challenges. A lorry takes 3 days on a good day to get to Ileret from Marsabit loaded with both goods and people. For the few who stock up the sanitary materials, they end up selling double the retail price to cover the transport costs. This leaves many women and girls with no option but to look for alternative methods which are crude and primitive – dig a hole far from home and sit on it for the 4 days or use rugs if you have some.

HADADEGE seeks to bridge this gap and ensure these important materials are readily available for girls in school, this will promote girl’s education, decrease early marriages and transactional s*x for pads , exploitation and lead to girl’s empowerment.
