Tina Kivuitu is the Managing Director of Trifam Investments Ltd. a property management and investment company based in Nairobi. She was instrumental in the setting up of Twakutukuza Trust and has been key in putting together the financial systems for Twa Trust at the onset. She has also served as an unofficial assistant to Doris in her capacity as Executive Director. Doris Mayoli is the Founder Trustee of Twakutukuza Trust. The Twakutukuza Trust is the brainchild of Doris Mayoli, a mother of 2 and breast cancer victor. Doris battled with cancer 8 yrs ago and came out victorious and cancer free. Whereas she was fortunate enough to afford treatment in Kenya and South Africa due to the generous giving of her friends and family, her heart has gone out to the majority of patients, especially in the rural areas, who do not have the privilege and ability to seek help elsewhere, and end up succumbing to the illness. She now raises funds to facilitate the treatment of patients who are unable to obtain treatment due to high costs. Together with a group of individuals living in Nairobi, some who have loved ones suffering from Cancer, or who have lost loved ones to this disease, the Trust has facilitated musical concerts since 2009 with a view to sharing the triumphant story of Doris’ healing and spreading hope. The concerts provide an avenue to give hope and encouragement to anyone dealing with difficult situations, and especially those dealing with cancer. They are staged annually and involve various local artists backed by a choir of over 170 volunteers. So far, Twakutukuza Trust has been able to support 160 patients financially using funds collected at these concerts. We have also given emotional support to at least 100 families directly and thousands of others who either attended the concerts, read Doris’ book chronicling her journey with cancer, listened to her interviews on either radio or tv, or read her story through print media. Doris also visits with patients and walks with them and their families through their journey. Doris’ story has been embodied in a song titled Dream Again composed by Kanjii Mbugua, a Kenyan recording artist. This song is available on YouTube. Doris journaled her journey with cancer – her experiences, struggles and indeed triumphs over breast cancer. These journal entries have spawned an inspirational book, Ashes to Beauty, which anyone with cancer and seeking encouragement should read.
