The Coalition for Peace and Gender Champions-Kenya was proud to participate in the Reparations Sensitization and Victim Documentation Forum organized by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), held on 4th June 2026 at Whispers Park Hall, Nyeri Town.
This forum was held pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1 of 2026 and orders of the High Court of Kenya, aimed at ensuring justice and redress for victims of the Maandamano demonstrations.
📋 Participants were encouraged to bring the following supporting documents:
🏥 Treatment notes, medical records, discharge summaries, and other hospital records for injured victims
📄 Post-mortem reports and death certificates where the violation resulted in death
🪪 National Identity Cards of victims and/or next of kin in fatal cases
🚔 Police abstracts relating to violations suffered
📁 Any other relevant documents relating to the violations suffered
⚖️ Among the Key Issues Discussed at the Forum:
✅ Satisfaction – Acknowledgment of the wrongs done to victims and public recognition of their suffering as part of the healing process.
✅ Restitution – Restoring victims, as much as possible, to the situation they were in before the human rights violations occurred.
✅ Rehabilitation – Highlighting rehabilitation pathways available to affected individuals and families, including medical, psychological, and social support.
✅ Compensation – Financial redress for physical, material, and psychological harm suffered by victims and their families.
✅ Guarantee of Non-Repetition – Structural and institutional reforms to ensure that such violations never happen again to any Kenyan citizen.
📖 Constitutional Education
Families and victims were also empowered through civic education on:
🔹 Chapter 4 of the Constitution of Kenya – The Bill of Rights, which guarantees the fundamental rights and freedoms of every Kenyan citizen.
🔹 Article 37 of the Constitution – Which protects every person's right to peacefully and unarmed assemble, demonstrate, picket, and present petitions to public authorities. This is a right, not a crime.
🚨 Special Address on Police Brutality:
Commissioner Professor Marion Mutungi of KNCHR delivered a powerful address on Police Brutality, emphasizing that it is a grave injustice and a violation of human rights.
