The Coalition for Peace and Gender Champions-Kenya was proud to participate in the Reparations Sensitization and Victim Documentation Forum organized by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), held on 4th June 2026 at Whispers Park Hall, Nyeri Town.
This forum was held pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1 of 2026 and orders of the High Court of Kenya, aimed at ensuring justice and redress for victims of the Maandamano demonstrations.

📋 Participants were encouraged to bring the following supporting documents:
🏥 Treatment notes, medical records, discharge summaries, and other hospital records for injured victims
📄 Post-mortem reports and death certificates where the violation resulted in death
🪪 National Identity Cards of victims and/or next of kin in fatal cases
🚔 Police abstracts relating to violations suffered
📁 Any other relevant documents relating to the violations suffered

⚖️ Among the Key Issues Discussed at the Forum:
✅ Satisfaction – Acknowledgment of the wrongs done to victims and public recognition of their suffering as part of the healing process.
✅ Restitution – Restoring victims, as much as possible, to the situation they were in before the human rights violations occurred.
✅ Rehabilitation – Highlighting rehabilitation pathways available to affected individuals and families, including medical, psychological, and social support.
✅ Compensation – Financial redress for physical, material, and psychological harm suffered by victims and their families.
✅ Guarantee of Non-Repetition – Structural and institutional reforms to ensure that such violations never happen again to any Kenyan citizen.

📖 Constitutional Education
Families and victims were also empowered through civic education on:
🔹 Chapter 4 of the Constitution of Kenya – The Bill of Rights, which guarantees the fundamental rights and freedoms of every Kenyan citizen.
🔹 Article 37 of the Constitution – Which protects every person's right to peacefully and unarmed assemble, demonstrate, picket, and present petitions to public authorities. This is a right, not a crime.
🚨 Special Address on Police Brutality:
Commissioner Professor Marion Mutungi of KNCHR delivered a powerful address on Police Brutality, emphasizing that it is a grave injustice and a violation of human rights. She firmly stated that police brutality must NEVER be normalized in our society, and called on all citizens to speak up and hold authorities accountable.

👥 Distinguished Guests & Officials Present:
🔸 DCC Mathira East
🔸 Ruth Nchagwa – Regional Coordinator, Central Region, KNCHR
🔸 Dominic Kabiru – Head of Public Affairs and Communications, KNCHR

🌟 Our own Njeri Mwangi took the floor and commended the KNCHR for the exemplary work they are doing in championing the rights of victims. She further urged Karatina residents to continue reporting complaints of human rights violations to the Commission, reminding the community that HAKI KWA WOTE – justice belongs to everyone, at all times.

STATEMENT BY COALITION FOR PEACE AND GENDER CHAMPIONS–KENYA (CPGC–KENYA) ON THE UTUMISHI GIRLS ACADEMY FIRE TRAGEDY

Coalition for Peace and Gender Champions–Kenya (CPGC–KENYA) joins the nation in mourning the heartbreaking loss of 16 students following the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the school community, friends, and all Kenyans affected by this painful tragedy. We also wish a quick and full recovery to the students who sustained injuries.

The death of children in learning institutions is a national tragedy that calls for urgent reflection, accountability, and renewed commitment to safety within schools and all institutions hosting children.
As investigations continue, we call upon all responsible authorities to ensure transparent, independent, and timely investigations into the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding emergency response measures.

CPGC–KENYA further emphasizes that safe evacuation during emergencies is a fundamental human right linked to the rights to life, dignity, security, health, and protection from harm. Kenyan, Regional and international human rights and safety frameworks obligate institutions to put in place adequate disaster preparedness and emergency response mechanisms to protect children and all persons during crises.

Under the Constitution of Kenya, every child has the right to protection, safety, dignity, and the highest attainable standards of health and security. International mechanisms including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child equally place a duty on institutions and states to safeguard children from preventable harm.

This tragedy reminds us that schools must not only be centers of learning, but also safe spaces equipped with:
✅Functional emergency exits and evacuation systems
✅Regular fire and disaster preparedness drills
✅Accessible emergency communication systems
✅Adequate firefighting equipment
✅Trained emergency response personnel
✅Trauma counseling and psychosocial support services for survivors and affected families.

We urge the Ministry of Education, county governments, school administrations, and all stakeholders to strengthen enforcement of safety standards in boarding schools and learning institutions across the country.

As a nation, we must move beyond reactive responses and invest in preventive safety systems that uphold the dignity and protection of every child.

CPGC–KENYA stands in solidarity with the affected families and communities during this difficult time. May the souls of the departed students rest in eternal peace.
