A programme of the Catholic Diocese of Murang'a (CDM) and partners. The project seeks to not only keep children from the street but also empower them and their families to become active citizens. Some boys were homeless for a few days, others as long as a year. Struggling in school and/or at home, running away was their solution to the caning and beatings they endured from parents, teachers or poli
ce. Surviving by scavenging and stealing to eat, street boys are prime recruits for Mungiki, a
gang also known as The Kenyan Mafia. If a boy accepts, they are given criminal tasks to fullfil, or be beaten until they comply or die. When arriving at St. Michael’s, most boys are malnourished, in poor health & behind in school. But now they are safe, receiving:
•3 nutritious meals daily
•Clothing, shelter and medical attention
•Counseling and guidance for moral growth
•Preparation to re-enter formal school
•Religious education for spiritual growth
•Physical fitness through sporting activities
•Instruction in farming & raising livestock
•Domestic training in cooking and laundry
