St Michael's Rescue Centre

St Michael's Rescue Centre The boys are runaways who lived on the streets of Central Province, an impoverished rural area of Kenya. Mungiki lures street boys with food and sweets.

A programme of the Catholic Diocese of Murang'a (CDM) and partners. The project seeks to not only keep children from the street but also empower them and their families to become active citizens. Some boys were homeless for a few days, others as long as a year. Struggling in school and/or at home, running away was their solution to the caning and beatings they endured from parents, teachers or poli

ce. Surviving by scavenging and stealing to eat, street boys are prime recruits for Mungiki, a
gang also known as The Kenyan Mafia. If a boy accepts, they are given criminal tasks to fullfil, or be beaten until they comply or die. When arriving at St. Michael’s, most boys are malnourished, in poor health & behind in school. But now they are safe, receiving:
•3 nutritious meals daily
•Clothing, shelter and medical attention
•Counseling and guidance for moral growth
•Preparation to re-enter formal school
•Religious education for spiritual growth
•Physical fitness through sporting activities
•Instruction in farming & raising livestock
•Domestic training in cooking and laundry

As part of our commitment to ensuring continued follow up of boys who were reunified with their families, St. Michael today together with other care leavers from children's institutions in Murang'a county attended a one day training in Murang'a where they shared experiences and exchanged ideas. They also formed Murang'a association of care leavers, with an aim of championing their needs. The event was organised by the Catholic diocese of Murang'a and partners.

Fulfilling our promises to the families we serve and improving their livelihoods is our main priority. This is done before reunifying the child with the family. We ensure that the families can access food, health care, shelter and education.

If you want visitors then keep your front door open. We were privileged to receive visitors from Kamahuha Vocational Training College who took time to talk to the boys. They also assisted in laundry duties, splitting of firewood and donated foodstuff to the centre. We thank them for the love.

Our footsteps keep marching forward, the success stories soaring – reaching deeper into the families that we serve, listening to their stories and transforming their daily livelihood.

We help families reintegrate into the community that once diminished them through empowering them with information, start-up capital and linkages with social protection agencies. This pillar is aimed at raising the dignity of the families, enabling them to meet the needs of the boys exiting care and retaining them at home.

The new competence-based education was seen by many as a viable reform to the education system in Kenya. As the pioneer learners continue to join their various senior schools, there is a growing concern by stakeholders on attaining 100% transition. Many learners are still at home due to lack of school fees, uniforms and other necessary scholastic materials.

But there is hope for those learners under St. Michael education programme as they continue to join their various senior schools. Today was the day meant for Lewis Njuguna who joined the Moi Forces Academy. We wish him all the best.
