Organization for Sustainable Development Africa (OSDA), alongside IOM Kenya brought together county government departments, the Forest Conservator, Kenya Forest Service, RACIDA, IGAD and other stakeholders for a consultative meeting on our Briquette Production Component, funded by KOICA.
The idea is simple but powerful: turn the Prosopis (Mathenge) invasion, which has been choking farmland across Mandera for years, into a livelihood opportunity. We are setting up a solar-powered facility that converts this invasive species into clean-burning briquettes, creating a sustainable enterprise for 12 youth, with ripple effects reaching close to 1,200 people in the wider community.
What stood out in the meeting was the depth of the conversation. There was a presentation followed by polite applause, stakeholders pushed hard on the right questions: how do we restore the land responsibly after clearing Prosopis, how do we prevent conflict over access to raw material, how do we make sure this still works once the project funding ends? Those are exactly the conversations that make a project like this sustainable rather than symbolic.
OSDA is grateful to have an opportunity to be a frontier innovator in solving social problems and turning them into economic opportunities. Excited to see this facility come to life in the months ahead

At OSDA, ending hunger is one of the goals we show up to work for every day.
In Mandera, Kenya, we have walked alongside smallholder farmers, equipping them with hands-on agricultural training, quality farm inputs, seedlings, and the tools to practice Climate Smart Agriculture in some of the most arid and underutilized regions of our country.
Because hunger is not inevitable. It ends at the grassroots, by uplifting the farmer, nurturing the soil, and planting a seed of lasting change.
None of this happens alone. We are deeply grateful for the partnership of IOM Kenya, the county government, the national government, and our donors, together, we are transforming households and building food-secure communities.
To every farmer who trusted the process, every partner who believed in the mission, and every supporter who made it possible, today, we celebrate you. ๐Ÿ’›
The movement to end hunger is alive. And we are just getting started.

Behind every thriving small business is someone who believed it was possible. This week, the OSDA team, alongside our partners at World Vision Kenya hit the road for a 2-day joint monitoring visit across Meygag, Sala, Bambo, Gari, and Warankara in Mandera County. Five communities. Thirteen small businesses. Countless stories of resilience. What we found moved us. The women, youth, persons with disabilities, and migrants we supported through the ELEVATE Africa Project are not just surviving, they are building. Stocking shelves. Growing produce. Serving customers. Creating jobs. Taking ownership of their economic futures in one of Kenya's most fragile and complex environments. Through in-kind grants provided under the ELEVATE project, these 13 SMEs have expanded their operations, stabilized their income, and are on track to create at least 25 direct jobs in a region where opportunity has historically been scarce. Mandera is a county defined by cross-border dynamics, displacement, and climate shocks. But it is also defined by the extraordinary grit of its people, and that is exactly what our team witnessed in the field. This is what development looks like up close, a mother holding her baby with one hand and running her produce business with the other. We are proud to implement the ELEVATE Africa Project in partnership with World Vision Kenya, under the leadership of IOM Kenya, and with the generous funding of KOICA. The journey continues. ๐Ÿ’ช

On 21st March 2026, OSDA joined key partners in the official flag-off of 197 metric tons of maize seed consignment aimed at supporting drought-affected communities in Mandera County.

This vital support, generously donated by ๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฟ in collaboration with the ๐—จ๐—ฃ๐—ฆ ๐—™๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, includes both treated and untreated maize seeds to help restore livelihoods and strengthen food security.

The distribution is being carried out by Kenya in partnership with the Mandera County Government, who have played a key role in identifying beneficiaries and coordinating efforts to ensure the support reaches the most vulnerable communities.

Initiatives like this are a crucial step toward building resilience and empowering communities to recover and thrive despite ongoing climate challenges.

Many people turn on a tap without thinking twice. ๐Ÿ’ง

But for many women and children in remote parts of Northern Kenya, water still means long walks, heavy containers, and hours spent each day just to meet a basic household need.

Day after day.

At OSDA, we are not standing by , we are on the ground working to change that reality. By installing solar-powered boreholes and water infrastructure, we are helping communities access clean, reliable water in a way that is sustainable, durable, and built to serve them for years to come.

Because access to water should not mean exhaustion, lost time, or missed opportunities.

Looking back at a proud moment we recently had in Ires Kinto, Mandera Countyโ€ฆ

What used to be long, exhausting treks for water under the blazing sun is now a thing of the past. Thanks to Mandera County Government drilling the borehole and OSDA equipping it with funding from European Union in Kenya via IOM Kenya , we delivered a solar-powered borehole ; clean, reliable and built to last with almost no maintenance.

Still flowing strong:
โœ… 50mยณ masonry tank
โœ… Community water kiosk
โœ… Livestock troughs
โœ… Secure solar fencing

This durable solution advances ๐—ฆ๐——๐—š ๐Ÿฒ (๐—–๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ), ๐—ฆ๐——๐—š ๐Ÿณ (๐—–๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐˜†), supports ๐—ฆ๐——๐—š ๐Ÿฎ (๐—ญ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ผ ๐—›๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ) via healthier livestock and aligns with ๐—ฆ๐——๐—š ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ (๐—–๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป).

Kids study instead of fetching water. Families thrive. Hope endures. Grateful to our partners for lasting impact.
