*PWAM's Engagement with Kilifi County on Malindi Dumpsite Rehabilitation*
Following PWAM's meeting with H.E. Gideon Mung'aro in Kilifi on Tuesday, 17 March 2026 and subsequent engagements on Wednesday, 18 March 2026 at Mombasa Cement offices with Mr. Patel, Mr. Akram, and Mr. Gulam, a follow-up joint meeting was held at the Malindi dumpsite on Tuesday, 24 March 2026. The earlier sessions had also included Kilifi County Attorney Hon. Luganje, Chief Officer for Lands & Physical Planning Mr. Tete, Malindi Municipality Board Chairman Mr. Suleiman, Deputy Manager Ms. Nafisa, and a site visit to the rehabilitated Kibarani dumpsite in Mombasa on Wednesday, 18 March 2026.
*Malindi Dumpsite Visit – 24 March 2026*
The visit brought together representatives from Mombasa Cement (Mr. Gulam and Mr. Nicholas), the Malindi Municipality (Mr. Suleiman and Ms. Nafisa), and PWAM (Kate, Erena, and Bronson) to assess the site and advance plans for fencing and rehabilitation.
However, the Municipality team did not have the necessary documentation, including survey records.
*Follow-up Action*
Kate subsequently reached out to CECM Madam Kamto to urgently prioritise action on the dumpsite. Madam Kamto committed to visiting the site alongside the Physical Planner and Surveyor to help establish the boundaries and unlock progress.
On Wednesday, 25 March 2026, Kilifi Physical Planner Madam Jacinta Makau and Surveyor Margaret briefly visited the dumpsite. PWAM is still awaiting their findings through CECM Madam Kamto.
*This is a matter of life and death, not merely an environmental issue.*
**Latest Update – 15 April 2026**
On Wednesday, 15 April 2026, Mombasa Cement deployed a team to the Malindi dumpsite and commenced site clearance and rehabilitation works.
The team mobilised heavy machinery, including bulldozers and trucks, to begin clearing accumulated waste and preparing the area for proper rehabilitation.
PWAM appreciates this decisive intervention, which marks a significant step toward restoring environmental safety and public health in Malindi.
Thank you to Mombasa Cement for stepping in to support Malindi by helping to protect lives and restore the environment. After years of exposure to toxic fumes from the dumpsite, residents can finally look forward to breathing cleaner, safer air.
PWAM now calls upon the County Government to provide a clear and coordinated way forward to sustain these efforts and ensure long-term waste management solutions.
