Friends of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest

Friends of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest The Friends of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest (FoASF) is a working group that advocate for the conservation of the forest through participatory approaches.

The Arabuko-Sokoke is an indigenous 420 square kilometre forest with 500 different kinds of birds mammals reptiles and butterflies and 10 resident animals that are globally threatened or are endemic to the forest and found nowhere else on earth. The Friends of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest was launched in 1999 to support the forest and remained active until 2007. Unfortunately the focus diminished and in

2014 the Arabuko-Sokoke came under threat. It was at this point it was decided to protect this unique and internationally renowned forest by relaunching the Friends of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest in order to:

monitor any destruction of the ecosystem in the forest by documenting and reporting illegal tree felling and the poaching of animals

Create awareness of the value of the forest amongst local and international communities

support the local farming communities, Kenya Forest Services and Kenya Wildlife Services. Arabuko-Sokoke is easily accessed from Malindi, Watamu and Kilifi is the second most important area in Africa for bird conservation after the Congo rainforest. For 1,000/- please become a Friend of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest to ensure that it remains for generations to come.

Indigenous seeds carry generations of resilience. On the frontline in forest regeneration are our seed collectors. For the last three years, they have been collecting seeds from rare rare and endangered native tree species to promote their regeneration.

The collected seeds are nurtured in local nurseries and later used in reforestation efforts; restoring forests, one seed at a time.

Clear paths improve forest access. Local youth-focussed have been working to clear and repair forest roads making it easier for access for protection and tourism. This effort helps to protect the biodiversity while creating local employment and strengthening community livelihoods.

Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is a biodiversity hotspot

Here’s a quick snapshot of elusive wildlife captured by camera traps deep within the forest. Camera traps offer a rare glimpse into the secret lives of species that call this unique ecosystem home.

Every bit of footage is a reminder of why protecting this forest matters.

What is meteorology?

It’s the study of weather and climate, and how they affect our daily lives. Weather and climate data help communities prepare for risks like droughts and floods, and this information is integral to our human-elephant conflict work, where changing weather patterns directly affect water, food, and movement. We use meteorology to plan and implement baraza mitigation tactics before conflict reaches intense heights.

World Meteorological Day recognises the science that helps keep both people and ecosystems safer.

Did you let World Water Day pass you by? We didn't. In its honour of it we draw attention to the importance of freshwater and equitable access. Water security is directly linked to health, ecosystems, and climate resilience.

Oftentimes, due to climate change, water is too scarce to sustain wildlife. This is why our Water For Wildlife initiative is crucial to the sustenance of the Arabuko-Sokoke ecosystem, feeding life to the forest through every donation. All contributions go toward keeping wildlife alive for generations to come. Link in bio.

We were pleased to present badges to the Green Committee members across the 14 schools participating in our program. These dedicated teams are at the forefront of promoting conservation awareness within their schools. The badges serve to recognise their commitment and visible leadership as they carry out their various activities.
