Youth For Sustainable Development is proud to stand as a key actor in creating safe and empowering spaces for children in Makueni County.

As the Kenya Children’s Assembly takes shape, we indorse our fervor to advancing children’s participation, protection, and development in line with the Children Act, 2022.

In the years ahead, our workplan will go beyond dialogue and into action as we work across the highway corridor to stop child exploitation and strengthen community-based protection for every child.

Every child deserves to be heard, protected, and given the chance to thrive.

Earlier this week, the YSD team participated in a forum bringing together Makueni CSOs under the Good Governance Project, spearheaded by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy

The forum focused on strengthening civil society oversight for greater accountability, with key discussions on public expenditure tracking, gender-responsive budgeting, climate finance oversight, and proactive audit.

This important initiative seeks to empower county-based CSOs to scrutinize public spending, influence budget decisions, and strengthen transparency and accountability in county governance.

Through capacity building, dialogue platforms, and structured engagement with County Assemblies, the project aims to promote inclusive governance and rebuild public trust.

We are proud to have been part of this meaningful conversation and to continue championing accountability, transparency, and citizen participation in governance.

Makueni CSOs Forge Consensus on 2026/27 Budget to Enhance Public Participation

In a bid to improve the quality of public input in the county's budget process, stakeholders at a forum convened by the Makueni Development Trust (MADET) have called for a more structured approach. The consensus was that establishing clear objectives before engaging communities will streamline the process, reduce confusion, and ultimately lead to better outcomes for residents.

The forum brought together Makueni Civil CSOs and key stakeholders for a preliminary review of the 2026/27 County Fiscal Strategy Paper (CFSP) and budget estimates.

The engagement focused on building a unified civil society position, consolidating technical inputs, and developing a joint advocacy memorandum.

This memorandum, containing key policy recommendations, will be submitted to county decision-makers to inform the upcoming and future public participation forums.

We have today participated in a high-level inception meeting convened at Greenpark Social Hall to advance ethics and accountability through the establishment of Integrity Clubs in higher learning institutions across Makueni County.

The initiative will be rolled out in Makueni University College, Kenya Medical Training College – Mbuvo Campus, and MICETI, institutions that play a critical role in shaping the county’s next generation of leaders and professionals.

The forum brought together Civil Society Organizations, representatives from higher learning institutions, officials from the Ministry of Interior, and county government representatives to build a shared understanding of Integrity Clubs and their contribution to anti-corruption efforts.
Discussions emphasized youth engagement as a governance tool, civic participation as a democratic responsibility, and the integration of digital tools to strengthen transparency and reporting mechanisms.

At YSD, we believe ethical leadership begins with informed, empowered young people. Strengthening integrity systems within learning institutions is not just preventive, it is transformative. By institutionalizing Integrity Clubs, we are creating structured platforms where students can actively champion accountability, responsible leadership, and sustainable development.

The future of governance in Makueni depends on the values we cultivate today.
