Kiliku Children Take Their Place in the Child Protection Movement

A safer school begins when children know their rights and know that their voices matter.

Last Thursday, Kiliku Comprehensive School became a space where children were empowered to understand, claim and defend their rights.

We launched a Child Rights Club at Kiliku Comprehensive School under the EmProtect+ Project.

The launch marked crucial step in strengthening child protection along transport corridor.

Through the club, learners will have a safe platform to learn about child rights, personal safety, safeguarding, resilience and reporting pathways, while building the confidence to speak up, support their peers and challenge violence and abuse.

With trained teacher patrons and community facilitators supporting the process, Kiliku’s learners are now part of a growing network of 12 Child Rights Clubs reaching at least 400 school-going children across hotspot communities in Makueni.

When children know their rights, they are harder to silence.

When they know where to seek help, they are harder to isolate.

And when they are empowered to lead, safer communities become possible.

At least 400 school-going children across Emali, Makindu and neighbouring hotspot communities in Makueni are set to benefit from strengthened child protection systems through the establishment of 12 Child Rights Clubs along the transport corridor under the EmProtect+ Project.

Today, Youth for Sustainable Development (YSD), with support from Terre des hommes Netherlands, trained 20 teacher patrons and 2 community facilitators to lead the establishment and sustainability of Child Rights Clubs in schools and communities.

For hundreds of children, these clubs will serve as safe spaces where they can learn about child rights, safeguarding, personal safety, leadership, resilience and appropriate reporting pathways. Through peer-to-peer engagement and guided mentorship, children will be empowered to recognize abuse, speak out against violence, seek timely support, and actively participate in creating safer schools and communities.

The trained teacher patrons will also strengthen school-based child protection systems by facilitating referrals, promoting meaningful child participation, mentoring club leaders, and ensuring that Child Rights Clubs remain active platforms for prevention, awareness and advocacy.

Every trained patron represents another layer of protection. Every Child Rights Club represents another safe space.

Strengthening Partnerships to Protect Every Child

Youth for Sustainable Development (YSD) Makueni, with support from Terre des hommes Netherlands (TdH NL), successfully convened the EmProtect+ Project Inception and Stakeholder Engagement Meeting in Emali, marking the official launch of a transformative child protection initiative in Makueni County.

The EmProtect+ Project seeks to strengthen child protection systems and safeguard children living along the Northern Transport Corridor from exploitation, abuse, trafficking, violence, child labour, and other forms of harm through coordinated, community-driven action.

The initiative brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government departments, schools, law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, civil society organizations, faith-based organizations, community leaders, private sector representatives, and development partners.

The engagement provided an opportunity to foster a common understanding of child protection challenges affecting vulnerable children in hotspot communities and strengthen collaboration, coordination, and referral pathways among child protection actors.

Strengthening Partnerships for Child Protection in Makueni

Today, Youth for Sustainable Development (YSD) Makueni, together with the Terre des hommes team from the Nairobi office, paid a series of courtesy visits to key government offices in Makueni County as part of the ongoing implementation of the EmProtect+ Project ahead of its inception tomorrow.

The delegation engaged with the:
✓Office of the County Commissioner
✓County Children Coordination Office
✓County Gender Office
✓County National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) Office

EmProtect+ is a child protection initiative that seeks to prevent and respond to the sexual exploitation of children by strengthening child protection systems, promoting safeguarding practices, empowering children and communities with knowledge on child rights, and fostering coordinated action among government institutions, civil society organizations, schools, and other key stakeholders.

The project aims to create a safer and more protective environment where every child can thrive free from exploitation and abuse.

The courtesy visits gave us an opportunity to introduce the project, strengthen collaboration with key government departments.

YSD Launches Child Rights and Protection Clubs to Strengthen Child Safety in Makueni

We have taken a significant step in advancing child protection and youth empowerment in Makueni County following the successful completion of school engagement visits in Emali and Makindu, through the EmProtect+ Project, courtesy of Terre des hommes

The initiative will enter a new phase with the establishment of Child Rights and Protection Clubs in participating Primary and Junior Secondary Schools.

The clubs are designed to provide learners aged 9–17 years with safe spaces to learn about their rights, develop leadership and life skills, and actively participate in safeguarding themselves and their peers from exploitation, violence, abuse, neglect, and other protection risks.

Under the project, YSD will directly engage 300 in-school learners and 60 out-of-school children and youth aged 9–24 years, building a strong network of young champions committed to promoting child rights, education, and community wellbeing.

Speaking on the initiative on the inception meeting held in Nairobi, project coordinator, Peter Mutuku emphasized that empowering children with knowledge and practical protection skills is critical in creating safer learning environments and resilient communities. “The organization will continue working closely with schools, parents, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure every child grows up in an environment where their rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled”, he added.

Youth For Sustainable Development is proud to stand as a key actor in creating safe and empowering spaces for children in Makueni County.

As the Kenya Children’s Assembly takes shape, we indorse our fervor to advancing children’s participation, protection, and development in line with the Children Act, 2022.

In the years ahead, our workplan will go beyond dialogue and into action as we work across the highway corridor to stop child exploitation and strengthen community-based protection for every child.

Every child deserves to be heard, protected, and given the chance to thrive.

Earlier this week, the YSD team participated in a forum bringing together Makueni CSOs under the Good Governance Project, spearheaded by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy

The forum focused on strengthening civil society oversight for greater accountability, with key discussions on public expenditure tracking, gender-responsive budgeting, climate finance oversight, and proactive audit.

This important initiative seeks to empower county-based CSOs to scrutinize public spending, influence budget decisions, and strengthen transparency and accountability in county governance.

Through capacity building, dialogue platforms, and structured engagement with County Assemblies, the project aims to promote inclusive governance and rebuild public trust.

We are proud to have been part of this meaningful conversation and to continue championing accountability, transparency, and citizen participation in governance.
