Today, Kyandulu Youth Empowerment Network (KYEN), with the generous support of ChildFund Kenya, proudly hosted a colorful and impactful World Environment Day celebration at Ilatu Secondary School (ACK St. Mark Muuni Secondary School) in Nguumo Ward.

The event brought together learners, teachers, community members, government representatives, development partners, and environmental champions in a shared commitment to protecting our planet and securing a greener future for generations to come.

The day was filled with vibrant performances, including environmental poems, songs, and traditional dances, all carrying powerful messages on conservation, climate action, and sustainable living under this year's global theme:

"Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

One of the highlights of the day was a large-scale tree planting exercise conducted within the school compound. Participants planted a variety of fruit and indigenous tree species, while community members were also provided with seedlings to take home and nurture in their own compounds. Every tree planted today represents hope, resilience, and a commitment to restoring our environment.

We were honored to host Dr. Issa Kipera, Country Director, ChildFund Kenya, who emphasized the critical role of parents, teachers, and communities in nurturing environmentally conscious children. He encouraged all stakeholders to empower young people with the knowledge and values needed to become custodians of our natural resources.

Our Chief Guest, Dr. Judith Wafula, Acting Vice Chancellor of Lukenya University, inspired participants by sharing the University's remarkable achievement of growing over 1.04 million trees, with an impressive 80% survival rate. She challenged learners to begin embracing green innovation early by initiating environmental projects within their schools and communities. Dr. Wafula further highlighted Lukenya University's partnership with ChildFund Kenya under the Regreening Africa Programme, reaffirming their commitment to planting one million trees annually.

As KYEN, we believe that climate action begins with communities. Through environmental education, youth engagement, advocacy, and tree-growing initiatives, we continue to champion a future where people and nature thrive together.

We extend our sincere gratitude to ChildFund Kenya, Lukenya University, participating schools, government officers, community leaders, environment clubs, volunteers, and every individual who contributed to making this event a success.

Today was not just a celebrationโ€”it was a call to action.

Let us plant more trees.
Let us protect our ecosystems.
Let us empower our children to become climate champions.
Let us continue walking the talk.

Together, we can regreen Kenya.

Today, KYEN, under the ChildFund Kenya -led "Together We Regreen Kenya" campaign and the , successfully held a vibrant pre-event activity in Kiunduani Market ahead of tomorrow's World Environment Day 2026 celebrations at Ilatu Secondary School.

The day was characterized by energy, commitment, and active youth participation as volunteers cleaned the streets of Kiunduani and its environs, while also replacing tree seedlings that had dried up from last year's successful **One Tree, One Shop Initiative**.

We were honored to be joined by officers from the County Government of Makueni, including Rachael Nzioka (Ward Development Officer, Nguumo Ward), Director Kiamba, Ali Musyoka, Anne Masila, Eunice Munywoki, and Thomas Tuta**, among other officers from the Department of Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture and Tourism. Their presence and encouragement reaffirmed the importance of community-led climate action and environmental stewardship.

One of the day's most powerful messages came from Thomas Tuta, who challenged us to promote personal responsibility in waste management, encouraging every shop owner and household to take ownership of their waste and keep their surroundings clean. He also inspired participants to embrace a culture of planting trees during birthdays as a meaningful way of celebrating life while giving back to nature.

We sincerely thank all the youth, community members, partners, and county officials who joined us today. Your commitment is proof that together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient Makueni.

Today, KYEN in partnership with ChildFund Kenya, Hatua Bora Youth Initiative and Lukenya University successfully carried out a series of impactful tree planting, mentorship and tree distribution activities at Yinzau and Mikululo Comprehensive Schools in Makindu Ward.

This initiative forms part of KYENโ€™s continued commitment towards championing Climate Action, Community Empowerment and Advocacy, alongside ChildFundโ€™s Climate Advocacy with Children under the Regreening Africa Program.

Since the beginning of this year, our mission has gone beyond simply planting trees โ€” we are intentionally nurturing responsibility, ownership and environmental consciousness among children. During todayโ€™s engagement, KYEN Executive Director, Shadrack Ndetei, strongly emphasized the importance of establishing Environment Clubs in schools so that learners can actively participate in environmental conservation and become ambassadors of climate action within their communities.

A total of 400 fruit and indigenous tree seedlings were planted in each school. Before the practical exercise, facilitators engaged learners on the importance of tree growing, conservation, environmental protection and long-term sustainability.

Hatua Bora Youth Initiative Founder, Micah Muthoka, inspired the pupils by highlighting the benefits of tree growing and the critical role young people play in the global fight against climate change.

ChildFundโ€™s Madam Faith sensitized learners on childrenโ€™s rights and the responsibility that comes with every right. She encouraged children to speak up against any form of abuse while reminding them that responsibility begins at home, in school and within society.

We were also honored to host Madam Mary from Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority (TARDA), working closely with Lukenya University under the 1 Million Trees Initiative. She practically guided learners through the entire tree planting process โ€” from digging and spacing to planting, mulching and proper maintenance of seedlings.

Additionally, Jacinta Mumbua from Dedicated Childrenโ€™s Agency (DeCA) โ€“ Emali, delivered a timely and powerful session on child protection rights amidst the rising cases of child abuse, neglect and violence in society today. Her message was clear and profound:
โ€œIf you do not take care of the environment, it will punish you.โ€

As we prepare to mark this yearโ€™s World Environment Day, todayโ€™s activity served as a strong reminder that meaningful change begins with action, partnership and empowering the younger generation.

Together, we are not only planting trees โ€” we are planting hope, responsibility and a sustainable future. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š
