Green Ukambani

Green Ukambani Committed to keeping Ukambani Green as we found it or even better. Tired of the annoying narrative of Ukambani is dry, not yet a reality. We say NO.

We are committed to changing that coz our parents did go green and so shall we. It starts with me and you. Keep your compound green, consult when not sure how. My childrens children will not live in a desert coz of my failure to act or partaking in environmental degradation.

If summer heat usually slows your garden down, try planting vegetables that are built for it 🌞 These crops are tough, productive, and perfect for warm weather.

Pest control works so much better when you don’t wipe out the helpful bugs too 🐞 A few gentle tricks I’d try first:
🥚 Use crushed eggshells as a rough barrier around tender plants
🧻 Slip toilet paper rolls around seedlings to protect young stems
🧄 Try garlic-soaked water for aphids, but test a few leaves first
🪙 Copper tape can help around pots where snails keep showing up
🍎 Apple cider vinegar traps work best away from the plants you’re protecting
The goal isn’t a perfect bug-free garden, it’s keeping pests under control without hurting the helpers.

Across the UAE, plastic bottles are being reused as plant shade tunnels to protect young seedlings from intense sunlight. Instead of throwing bottles away, communities cut, arrange, or connect them into lightweight coverings that filter harsh rays while still allowing air and some light to pass through. This gives fragile plants a better chance to grow during hot days when direct sun can dry soil quickly and damage tender leaves.

The design is simple, low-cost, and useful in dry environments. Bottles can be shaped into small tunnel-like covers over garden beds, helping reduce heat stress and slow moisture loss from the soil. Because the material is light and easy to collect, schools, gardeners, and local groups can create these protective structures without expensive equipment.

Beyond gardening, this idea shows how waste can be turned into everyday protection. Unused bottles gain a second useful life, while seedlings receive the shade they need to survive difficult weather.

The right trellis makes a big difference, especially once the vines get heavy 🌱 A few matches that make sense:
🪢 String trellis works for lighter climbers like peas and beans
🥒 A-frame trellises are great for cucumbers and smaller squash
🌸 Wire arches are pretty for pole beans, sweet peas, and nasturtiums
🎃 Heavy squash, pumpkins, and melons need a much stronger setup
I’d rather overbuild a trellis than watch it collapse halfway through the season.

Sunday afternoon is a power hour. After feeding your soul, use this time to plan how you will feed the body that carries it.

Am a believer that the safest food is the food you grow yourself, or food from a farmer you know.

You should know your farmer.
-How do they rear their chickens that give you meat and eggs?
-How do they keep their cows that supply your milk?
-How do they grow the vegetables you eat every day?
-Which products do they use on their farms?

I have repeated this many times: bio and safe farming is the only way forward. I personally use Agripest from Kapi to grow all my crops. Choose a product you trust and stay consistent.

In the export market, there is a standard called product traceability. This means a consumer can trace where their food came from, who grew it, and which inputs were used. It builds trust, transparency, and market value.

You can turn this same principle into a local business model:

Safe Food Business Model
1.Grow bio and safe food. Use trusted bio products like Agripest from Kapi.

2.Document your process. Keep simple records of your inputs and practices.

3.Build farmer-consumer trust. Share your production journey online or directly with your customers.

4.Sell through honesty. Label your produce “Grown with Bio Inputs” and show proof.
5.Target premium buyers. Hotels, health stores, and families seeking clean food will pay more.

Safe food is no longer a niche, it’s the future.
Feed your soul. Feed your body. Build your business.
