On Saturday 9th May, members of the Rotary Club of Athi River went on a WASH needs assessment road trip to Mwingi, Kitui County.
The visit was both eye-opening and humbling as we engaged the communities and heard firsthand the challenges they face due to water scarcity — from walking long distances in search of water, to the prevalence of water-borne diseases, and children missing school to help fetch this basic but critical resource.
As part of a structured needs assessment and project planning process, we were able to capture key community needs, stakeholder insights, and potential impact areas that will guide the sustainability and implementation of the intervention.
With the findings gathered, we now look forward to the possibility of implementing a transformative WASH project through the drilling of two boreholes in partnership with RC Davenport, USA, and Fishers of Men Ministries. The potential impact on health, education, dignity, and economic productivity within these communities is immense.
Service above self continues to remind us that sustainable impact begins with listening, planning, and working together with the community.
